Hello!

When it comes to straight hair, ain’t no-one doing it better than Kim ‘Kimmy K-West’ Kardashian.

So what can you do to get a taste of her glossy locks? Jessica Jane Sammut tests out three of the latest hair tools in town.

From someone who has curly hair, I have always struggled to keep my mane in check. The problem is I love straight tresses, but I don’t love competing with the wind/rain/humidity/heating in trying to keep it wave and frizz-free.

I want natural easy-going high-shine thick and beautiful long straight locks à la the Kardashians (I’ll take their money too, thanks), and I want it NOW. Not too much to ask, hey?

So, what’s the answer?

The right tools

“If you have the right products and the right technology for your hair type, the rest is easy,” advises James Patten of RY (Recreate Yourself) Australia.

But what if you don’t know which tools are best? With an expensive price tag, it is not really something you want to get wrong so I tested out three of the leaders on the market, here is my opinion on them:

1) The Cloud Nine original iron

A great little product, light and easy to use, The Cloud Nine Original Iron is a hair straightener with ceramic plates and one-touch temperature control which cleverly allows you to choose the heat level according to your hair type/strength/sensitivity – ranging from 100 to 200 degrees Celsius. Excellent if you want to have complete control over how much heat your hair is exposed to (handy if you have highlights or sun-damaged locks), the iron is easy to use, and if inactive for 30 minutes, goes into hibernation mode.

Leaving hair smooth and straight, the iron reminds me of the GHD iron I used to have a few years ago, and competes just as well.

KIM-OMETER VERDICT: 75% KIMMY

2) The GHD Eclipse

Available in a gloss-white finish, the GHD Eclipse is certainly a product which feels and looks like the future of hair. With a very fast warm-up time (uber important for me in the morning) and an audio signal when ready (super helpful), the iron is amazing at giving a poker straight look quickly, leaving hair oh-so-shiny and smooth after use.

Using tri-zone™ technology, with three sensors on each plate, there is also no loss of heat during styling as it glides down the hair shaft with ease.

A good-looking addition to any beauty regime, I loved the GHD Eclipse for its fast results and stylish persona, with my mane looking like I had just stepped out of a salon when I had finished, even though I started out with some severe bed-head kinks!

KIM-OMETER VERDICT: 85% KIMMY

3) The L’oreal Professional Steampod hair treatment and straightening system

One of the newer tools on the block for home use is the L’Oreal Professional Steampod Hair Treatment and Straightening System, touted to be a revolutionary steam smoothing system that repairs the hair as you style.

Different to standard irons, this straightening wonder also uses steam (as well as plates) to open up the hair cuticle to deliver pro-keratin (via a post-wash Steampod Smoothing Cream that you need to apply (available in normal or sensitised) deep within the fibre of the hair.

I have to say, I am hooked. Originally only available as an in-salon treatment, the Steampod is without a doubt hands-down the best at fighting the elements, including humidity (perhaps because the hair shaft is already infused with water), retaining its look and feel for several days.

With five variable heat settings, you can choose how hot you would like the iron, and although it is bulkier and heavier than its styling counterparts (which can be something to consider if travelling a great deal), I would say that the results more than make up for it.

After smoothing some Steampod serum over my hair before stepping out the door, I even had the urge to take a selfie. Kimmy K-West, I’m onto you!

KIM-OMETER VERDICT: 95% KIMMY

  • I like my hair with a bit of a wave so the super straight look is not it for me.

  • I need some healthy hair tips, my hair is dry, breaking and splitting. The hair is definitely the only thing I would wish to have in common with Kim Kardashian! She’s so fake, such an attention seeker, her hubby is an idiot with a massively over inflated ego….but little North is gorgeous!

  • She does have pretty nice hair, well it looks that way!

  • hmmm – I’d rather keep my hair the way it is, and using natural ingredients to treat my hair at the end of each season.

  • Personal hairdresser plus hair extensions and yep….I might get close then! Otherwise, forget about it!

  • Whilst I love the look of Kim’s hair – it looks so shiny and healthy – I don’t have the time or the inclination for that kind of effort. I find only washing my hair 2 days a week has made my hair healthier and not so dry from when I blow dried it or straightened it daily. A 5-weekly colour at the hairdressers is my treat where my hair is pampered and styled.

  • I’m lucky to get a brush near my hair in the mornings, sometimes its only raked through with my fingers. I found this an interesting read, to see what I’m missing out on. Thanks.

  • I think having your own personal hairdresser would do the trick!

  • Ugh anti Kim k HOWEVER I have owned the library steam pod for almost a year and swear by it!!! Best $$$ ever spent and was an absolute ghd only user. The difference is amazing! My hair is 100% better off with the steam pod! My hairdresser used it for about 3years and last year I decided to purchase it. Will NEVER use another hair straightener again. I use kerastse before I straighten and works just as well as the loreal keratin…

  • I must say I would love to try the Loreal system, but remember spending dollars on a wet to dry straightener years ago, that turned out to be shocking for my hair. Some places that sell things like Miracurl etc have the products on display for people to see how they work and also on themselves. I think as a customer, the next time I see one of these products I’m going to ask them if I can use it on my own hair, because it’s one thing in the hands of a skilled professional, but it’s another thing getting the product home and using it for yourself.

  • First – Start with thick hair whether curly or straight.
My hair is straight as a dye – but as it is as thick as a spider’s silk, I’ll never get KK’s hair or anything remotely approaching it.
