Hello!

Shopping online is always a fun experience.

With virtually unlimited choice, great prices, sales, and offers – it is difficult not to be lured into the plethora of available sites.

Most women who shop online for their clothes normally know their size, but a good number of them are not aware of their full body measurements. Non-standardised sizing at the different online stores is confusing enough, but not knowing your own body measurements will create a disaster if you want to shop online.

First off, you must understand that the best way to shop online and buy only those dresses that truly fit, is to know your body measurements, and also stick to shopping at online stores that provide good clothing measurements. It is noteworthy that online stores with well-detailed clothing measurements take size and its fitness more seriously.

Now, if you want to receive and unpack clothes that fit you perfectly, then it is important to think before you click. So get out your measuring tape!

Here’s how to measure your body size:

 What do you need?

1. A measuring tape (soft, flexible fabric looking ones)

2. In a situation where you don’t have a measuring tape, find a thin rope. Use it to take points, then measure those points with a ruler.

3. A pencil and paper for notes

Upper body – For tops, shirts, tees, tunics, blouse, cardigans

1. Bust.

Measure your bust size, which is the fullest part of your chest (at your nipples). This should be measured whilst wearing a soft, unmoulded cup, and also remember to do the measurement with your arms down.

2. Shoulders.

Measure your shoulders from tip to tip, here you may need assistance – maybe from a friend.

3. Waist.

Wrap the measuring tape around the smallest part of your waist (usually about an inch above your bellybutton) and measure.

4. Upper arm.

Knowing how the armholes fit a particular top always comes in handy, so measure your upper arms (bicep area).

Match up all your measurements with the a measurement chart to find the best fit.

Lower body – For pants, tights, skirts

1. Waist.

Measure your waist at the slimmest part of your midsection, remember this is roughly an inch above your bellybutton.

2. Hips.

To get the actual circumference of your hips, measure the widest part. If you’re confused and do not know where this is, try around 6-7 inches below your waist.

3. Inseam.

For the length of your inseam, which is the inside part of your leg from the crotch to the feet. Measure the distance from the top of the inside of your thigh to the base of your anklebone. This measurement will help you decide whether you need your pants hemmed, or if it is just too short for your height.

4. Pay attention to the rise of the bottoms you plan to buy.

If it is a low rise pants or tight, then the waist size provided for it would be larger depending on how low it rests on your hips.

This is simply how retailers measure the clothing they stock. And by understanding how manufacturers or retailers measure the clothing pieces and acknowledging your own body measurements, hopefully, the next time you buy something online, that piece should fit you to a T!

Well, you are now ready to take on the women’s clothes online shopping world by storm!

Happy shopping ladies!

  • I’ve had hit and miss with online shopping for clothes.

  • I bought online from ASOS and the clothing sizes were way out, even after I measured myself using their own size chart. Now I stick to instore shopping!

  • yep i find that most online retailers will state both ways to be sized up and most are happy to exchange wrong sizes anyway

  • Sadly this scenario is so true. Nearly everything I buy online never fits to size . If I’m a 16 top so I purchase a xxxl and it to small OMG. I give up.

  • I think this is a great informative piece and should be put out there a lot more. I have tried to purchase a top on like that I really liked, the first one would not even go over one breast never mind the rest of my top and this made me feel so fat as I ordered a size two times bigger than I purchase here. So then for the second time I tried to get one three sizes bigger than size here and it was still way to small so ending up feeling very big, fat and worthless this was after losing 14 kilos of weight. I wish I had this information previously. Thank You.

  • I love online shopping – of any description! And, yes, I have purchased clothes online. If dealing with a new online store, I will buy a standard, cheaper piece first, so I can be sure of the sizing before putting in a full order. Once you are happy with the sizes, you can safely order whatever you like with confidence! Online stores tend to have better and bigger sales so you can really score some great bargains!

  • I’m happy to buy some things online, like a specific brand Dutch shoes I really like, or a wider shirt, blouse or cardigan. Things like trousers, skirts and bras -what need to sit properly- I like to first fit then buy in the shop.

  • No I do not like to purchase online as I much prefer to try an item on first before I purchase it.
So many things look good on a hanger but once on your body the appeal is just not there.

  • I never bought clothing online. I am too afraid they won’t fit and I don’t want the hassle to have to send everything back, also thinking that the Post Office is not close by.

  • Only certain brands that I know well.

    • Also – I have found some bargains online – cheaper than some store prices.
