Hello!

With my little one’s birthday just around the corner and knowing her love for face painting I wanted hire someone for her party that would make all the kids whatever they wanted to be (a tiger, spiderman, butterfly etc.), then I saw the costs…. So I decided to look into making my own face paint and discovered how easy it was to do!

Here is how to make your own face paint:

Simply buy some washable paint – always best to get it from some of the bigger department stores as they tend to have big brands for a smaller price.

PLEASE ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU ARE PURCHASING PAINT THAT WILL NOT REACT WITH YOUR CHILDS SKIN. Mont Marte has SKIN FRIENDLY paint that you can purchase, please visit here for more detail > montmarte.net

Purchase some moisturizing lotion – again check out the bigger department stores to see what they have on sale.

Get yourself some little plastic tubs that have lids so you can mix up individual colours and they won’t dry out.

Then simply mix equal portions of the skin friendly washable paint with the moisturizing lotion in the individual tubs and voilà you have made your own face paint.

So I had solved how to get away with a nice cheap option for the paint, now how about the painter? Well that was easy – a few of the older kids that were invited wouldn’t want to be involved in the little kids games so why not make them artists for the day? Give them something to do and solve my face painter problem – win, win!

Happy days!

Do you have any tips and tricks to add? Maybe you have another cheap and easy idea for the kids?

  • And a whole bunch of dumb bunnies run out to put poster paint in their kids. ‘Skin safe paint’ is face paint & doesn’t need lotion. Additionally, the photos show artists using real face paint.

  • The photos, at least the top one, aren\’t of designs done with this homemade \”face paint\” but with professional, non-toxic, FDA compliant gave paints. You certainly wouldn\’t get the same results by missing lotion and craft paint, never mind the potential for irritation, burns sensitisation reactions and so on. This article is very worrying.

  • This is one of the most irresponsible posts as a parent I have ever seen. I would never use just any paint to paint on my child\’s face let alone anyone else\’s child. Mixing any type of washable paint with moisturiser is NOT face paint. They could react chemically together causing serious reactions to the child\’s skin. Children have delicate skin. As a mother I would not be willing to let anyone put my child at risk like this. Only cosmetic grade face paint should be used. I would also recommend using a professional painter who is fully insured. The photos above are not homemade paints but in fact cosmetic grade face paint these are very misleading images attached to the post!

  • Some IDIOT once painted my daughter with that watercolour paint that kids use. As it dried on her face, the paint tightened, she was SCREAMING to get it off. It was one of the worst experiences I have had as a mother. She is still terrified to get her face painted to this day.

The reason facepainters use expensive paint is because it is COSMETIC grade and designed for skin. If you don’t want to pay a professional, go buy some Monte Marte face paint. You can buy it in art and craft shops and discount shops, and it is made for SKIN.

  • Are you serious? This little toxic goop you have cooked up is not safe. Washable craft paint does not mean safe for sensitive little faces. I have seen this stuff leave children with painful red marks on their faces. Yes professional face painters are more expensive than these poisonous little pots of paint but there are very good reasons for that. Training, hours upon hours of practise, adherence to quality hygiene practices, and most importantly the use of cosmetic grade face paints that meet safety standards.

  • You should never use washable paints as face paint. While a substance may be non-toxic, you’ll find that the manufacturer will also warn you about using them on the skin for any cosmetic purpose, because they aren’t designed or approved for that. Only face paints which meet cosmetic restrictions should be used on children.

  • I’m in absolute shock that people find this method okay!!! First of all, the reason we professional face painters charge so much is because 1) we use the highest quality FDA approved paints that are so safe they could get in your child’s eyes and mouth and not cause a problem, or skin reactions. 2) we are insured. 3) We spend HOURS learning, studying, practicing, taking classes, watching videos, and talking with other professional face painters so we can better our techniques. Making it look easy doesn’t happen over night. 4)we’ve invested a shit ton of money to ensure we are the best face painter you will ever find! DO NOT DO WHAT THIS BLOGGER HAS SUGGESTED, YOU COULD FIND YOURSELF IN A LAWSUIT WHEN A CHILD HAS A HORRIBLE REACTION TO THAT CONCOCTION!!!!

  • Oh my gosh. PLEASE do NOT make your own face paint with washable paints. They are NOT designed to be put on faces. If you are going to buy ANY paint to do your own face painting, just buy a little Snazaroo kit, which should not cost you more than $30.00. Snazaroo is less expensive than other professional, FDA approved, face paints. When you hire a face painter you are not just paying for the paints. You are hiring someone who has public liability insurance and has practiced their butt off to create professional designs. Their products, travel, insurance and time that they take away from their own families does have a price. If you can’t afford a professional, at least do yourself and all the kids a favor and buy a small FDA approved face painting kit! Yes I am a face painter.

  • If you think combining two different chemicals is safe, you are wrong. Professional fda approved body paint and make up are made to keep you and your children safe. Unless you are a scientist – I would risk putting homemade makeup on anyone.
    Use common sense.

  • This is not safe. Please don’t put these paints on kids faces. Actual fave paints have to be cosmetic grade. Other paints can at best stain the skin and at worst cause skin reactions.
I am having trouble with the fact this article is on a reputable site.
