If you have carpet in your house, it’s inevitable that you will get stains on it, especially if you have kids or pets. Carpet cleaning products are expensive and in my experience they don’t always work.

There is a solution! You can remove the stain without chemicals, using items from your pantry.

DIY carpet stain removal

What you’ll need:

  • Baking soda (bi-carb)
  • white vinegar
  • dishwashing liquid

Method:

  1. Vacuum area.
  2. Wet the stain.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda on the stain and rub lightly on the stain with your fingers. Leave it for 10+ minutes.
  4. Vacuum up the excess baking soda.
  5. Combine a cup of warm water, 1/4 cup of vinegar and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. Use this mixture to blot the stain until it is gone.
  6. Dry the area with a paper towel.

I tried this on a stubborn stain in one of the kid’s bedrooms and it worked. Carpet stain removers had previously only faded the stain, not removed it.

Try it out and let me know how you go. Please add your comment below.

  • Baking soda is a versatile ingredient with many uses beyond cooking. It is particularly effective in neutralising odours and cleaning.

  • I have large rugs on a slate floor in the living areas and carpet in the hallway and bedrooms upstairs but the carpet is probably 40 years old and it needs to go.

  • Make sure you blot the moisture up quickly especially during cool weather. These days carpet is laid on cement which doesn’t breathe at all. Damp cement will go mouldy. Two of my neighbours have this problem caused by damp cement with floor covering on top of it. I won’t tell you what it smelt like when one lot of floor covering was lifted.

  • I always use bicarb on the carpet – mainly to freshen it up and get rid of the pet smell. Sprinkle it down, leave for 10 minutes then vacuum :-)

  • I like the natural ingredients. For very aggressive stains in the carpet I use sometimes hydrogen peroxide 3%.

  • Had ‘professional’ carpet cleaners in – now have stains six inches from my walls – someone has said this is the stain from the carpet backing. How can I remove these stains?
Have tried Lush’s idea, and all the commercial treatments you can buy – still no success.
