Keeping your knives sharp is essential to your kitchen and you need to sharpen your knives to keep them working at their best.

What you’ll need:

Sharpening steel and your knives.

Method:

1. Position your knife at right angles to the sharpening steel.

2. With the knife at a 10-degree angle to the steel, gently slide the knife along the steel, applying some pressure. As you slide the knife, slide the knife away from the steel so the whole knife-edge is sharpened.

3. Repeat with the other side of the knife blade by repeating this underneath the sharpening steel.

After sharpening our knives, I was surprised at how well the knives cut, obviously they were very blunt before!

  • Great read. I usually take my knives to my parents whenever I visit for a sharpening but found they had thrown out the sharpening block I used so will have to use this instead. They have one hidden away

  • I use stay-sharp knives in a sharpening holder – after almost 10 years they are still just as sharp as they get sharpened every time they are removed from the holder. They are also much safer to store in my opinion

  • I’d be so worried that I’d slip and somehow cut myself this way. Purchased a scanpan knife sharpener. It was a great investment

  • Does take practice to get them sharp worth learning to do

  • This is hubby’s area of expertise in our house. Everything is sharp here (except my gardening secateurs when I need them most). Even my mum and my Grandma line him up to fix their knives when we visit. And the way my son is going, he’ll have this skill down pat soon too.

  • Our knife block has a sharpener in it

  • It depends on the manufacturing method of the knives. Some are made in such a way that they never have to be sharpened
