Nobody wants to go to the shops everyday for fresh fruit and vegetables so how do we keep our fresh produce fresh for longer?

Here are some great storage tips to help keep your fresh fruit and vegetables fresh:

1) Store asparagus like a flower and put in in a jar with water on your bench.

2) Individually wrap your cucumbers in a paper towel and place in a plastic bag in the fridge.

3) Store tomatoes on the bench not in the fridge, this ensures they ripen and taste their best.

4) Onions, garlic, potatoes and sweet potatoes should be stored in the cupboard.

5) Put cut basil in a jar with the stems in water and cover it in a plastic bag.

6) Store lettuce and celery in foil to make them last much longer.

7) Keep your apples in the fridge to keep them crisp.

  • These are really great tips. Fruit lives on the counter in the bowl and veggies in the fridge however may need to reassess that now

  • What great tips. I’m going to try the cucumber one. Ours always go soggy in fridge.

    • That happened to me too. I found out one of the reasons was I had the fridge temperature set a bit too low.
Our fridges don’t have the same temperature control and atmosphere as commercial cold stores. I have had apples shrivel in my fridge after a few weeks which was set quite cold.

  • I keep my onions, garlic, potatoes and sweet potatoes in a cupboard, but I have made storage bags out of cotton to store the produce otherwise everything, including the onions and garlic, would get eaten by cockroaches. By keeping everything in cotton bags, the produce can breathe and the cockroaches can’t get in.

    • I keep them in paper bags, after making some holes throughout them. Then in the pantry.

  • The celery wrapped in aluminium foil stays good for a long time.
Ginger can be stored in the freezer and grated from frozen state when needed.
