  • I’ve never really tried to tie a tie. My husband has always been able to tie one, and he has passed that onto my son who has to wear a tie to school. I always thought God help me if my son forgets on any given morning. We would obviously google it or ring hubby!!

  • I remember teaching my children to tie a tie – they tied it on a dress mannequin in front of a mirror, so they would be able to do it on themselves. Worked a treat.

  • When my brother and I were young I remember us practising (using an old tie) on door handles, especially in the hot weather. I wish we had videos then. Dad was a perfectionist so we used to practise before he came home from work. We waited a week or so before we showed him what we did. It wasn’t quite right but we improved a lot him not looking over our shoulders criticizing.

  • Thanks – good to know how to tie a tie. It is a valuable skill and one that should not be lost.

  • STILL an art people need to know. Wondering how long it will take to be fazed out though.

    • Hopefully not – clip on ties do not sit and look the same as a beautiful tie.

      • yeah i agree. the real thing is cool and looks more formal :)

  • My! This does make it easy! Our child’s school has ties as part of the uniform from grade 1. It took the best part of a year to gain required skills. As with all things, perseverance and patience pay off.

  • A great guide. I used to wear a tie as part of my school uniform but my dad always tied it for me at the start of the week so I never really learned. Thanks for sharing.
