A man charged with murdering his wife and assaulting his three young children this week pleads he is a loving father.

Earlier this week we reported on three children involved in an assault, police then arrested their father Bassam Raad, 34, who has briefly faced an out-of-sessions court hearing on Wednesday night charged with one count of murder and three counts of intentionally causing serious injury, reports 9 NEWS.

He was arrested after his three young children, all aged under six, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries on Monday night.

Homicide detectives linked him to the murder of a then-unidentified 27-year-old woman whose battered body was found dumped about two kilometres from the family’s Broadmeadows home wrapped in a quilt by a passing jogger on June 17.

During the hearing police confirmed the woman was Raad’s wife Zeinab Taleb.

Detective Senior Constable Miranda Stubbs told the hearing police believes Raad murdered his wife at their home after forensic officers found a considerable amount of blood inside.

Dressed in a blue police-issued jumpsuit and black thongs, a clean-shaved Raad told the bail justice he feared for his safety while in custody and should be granted bail.

“My heart is breaking. I want to see my kids,” Raad told the hearing.

“I am a loving father.”

Surrounded by nine homicide detectives, Raad also told the hearing police had refused to give him his thyroid medication, a shower or clean clothes to wear during his two days in custody.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

  • Considering how long it took and how many pleas were made when this young woman’s body was found, even to detailing the scarf she was wearing so that an identity could be made, then this low-life [can’t think of anything else he could be called] has a lot to answer for. The police even went interstate and to Interpol in effort to determine her identity I believe. Raad knew, and knew what he had done, and what he had inflicted on his children. He doesn’t deserve any leniency at all.

  • Sounds like a sick man. One who murdered his wife and abused his children. He might have love his children but seem not to be able to act lovingly.

  • He murdered his wife and assaulted his children and he is moaning because the police didin’t give him a shower! – man I think that is the least of his problems. I hope they have enough evidence to convict him and throw away the key!

  • He may love his kids, but that doesn’t mean he either acts in a loving way towards them or is good for them.

  • A loving father? he has to be joking. I wonder what excuse he is going to use. The children would have been very distressed by their Mother missing. He probably couldn’t cope with them being upset……and he caused it. now htey have physical and physological abuse from his actions.

  • What a sad case! These kids lost their mum. And, for their sake, I hope the father will stay very far away from them.

  • this guy is probably going to plead insanity or something, or get off on a lesser charge

  • A loving father would not have injured his children, and would have called police as soon as he discovered his wife was missing.
