I am for. I know this subject can be a tricky one and often it’s a debate that gets quite heated.

I am also happy for people to choose and to make their own opinions on the subject. In reality anything we decide for our children is a personal one at that.

Before I had children I worked in doctors surgeries. I would realise later this helped me come to my decision about vaccinating my children when the need arose.

My son was 9 months old when he contracted German measles. A shy 3 months off from having an injection that would have helped prevent him from getting it. At the time I was furious that my child had been exposed and unknowingly we had exposed others during his infectious period.

I knew the dangers that the infection could bring. I worked in a surgery and had seen firsthand what childhood diseases could do. It is not a sight you want to witness.  And in many cases long term damage is felt.

My Aunty contracted Polio when she was a young girl and the effects are life lasting.

I am grateful that there are new studies being done all the time in regards to Modern Medicine. Studies that can help alleviate initial fears.

I am thankful that my children have NOT suffered adverse reactions thus far.

The herd will protect. My children are a part of the herd.

So I vaccinate. I dislike doing it. I dislike my children crying. I dislike hurting them. But I would  dislike more the dangers that could arise. I treat it like insurance. Sure they might not have contracted anything, but I’d rather there is a buffer in case they do/could.

Tuesday is my youngest child’s turn. His four year old immunisations. I know from the outset he is also going to be the most difficult to take.

I’ll hold his hand,

I’ll brace myself.

I’ll soothe his tears.

I’ll remember that in reality it is 10 mins that could save his life.

  • Immunisation for sure. We are a lucky generation that hasn’t seen the effects of some of these diseases and feel we have a choice. I’d much rather never know the effects of these diseases and get the immunisations. Trust the experts!!

  • I am a strong supporter of immunisation. Last year, my husband and two of our children got whooping cough, despite being fully immunised. It did mean they all got a much milder dose of the illness than had they not been immunised at all. I felt so helpless during the months it took for them all to recover. The worst was the heart-break nursing a 1yr old, trying to help her breathe.

  • I am a mummy that immunises, rather prevent.

  • Thanks for sharing this interesting article; parents have to make the choice for their child and protect them from danger and it includes vaccination from preventable diseases. Ten minutes of crying is better than contracting a preventable disease and the complications of the diseases.

  • I agree with you! I’m for immunisation. Even though it’s very hard to see my little one to cry, to cause her pain, but it is for her benefit, to help prevent serious illness.

  • I don’t understand why people don’t immunise each to there own but how do they get them into schools and kinders if they don’t??

  • I know there are risks involved in having immunisations, but all children MUST be immunised. Schools won’t take children if they haven’t been immunised nowadays. Whooping Cough is back, Why? Because of those parents who won’t immunise their children. Have you seen a baby with Whooping Cough? It is so sad and awful to see a little baby so sick, it brings me to tears. My daughter and son in law both have had whooping cough over the last couple of years.

What will happen if Polio comes back, and it will. If people don’t immunise their children, these dreaded diseases will return, and I would never forgive any parent for not immunising their children if one of my grandchildren gets terribly ill with Polio or Whooping cough or any of those other diseases we thought were gone.

Please, I beg of you, the chance of getting very sick with polio or whooping cough far outweighs the risks of having the injections.

  • My child had a bad reaction to a vaccination, not life threatening but as with most things, it could have been. I discussed it with the doctor who, when it came time for the booster, ran simple tests (yes tears involved) & found out the culprit…. and left it out of the mix. I am for.
