Research indicates that some are unluckier than others when it comes to the day that they celebrate their birthday…

Whether you love birthdays or hate them, everyone’s got one and at some point, you’ll no doubt be faced with the joy of public embarrassment as your family and friends sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to you. Even though we all have a birthday, new research shows that some of us are born on a better day of the year than others…

Blame The Seasons

Weather played a significant role in determining which dates are ideal to celebrate your birthday according to research by Interflora, so with the study carried out in the Northern Hemisphere, you can take some of the findings with a pinch of salt.

16 December was found to be the worst day of the year to celebrate a birthday, in part due to the wintery weather much of the world experiences, but also in part due to the proximity to Christmas – combined presents anyone? There’s also the issue of friends and family being away over the holidays meaning you are likely to see a lot of guests press ‘unable to attend’ if you plan to hold a party. It seems that those born on the 16th are not alone, with over 30% of people born in December admitting that their birthday often gets overlooked in favour of the festive season. While December is one of the better months in Australia when it comes to weather, the chance of your birthday being on the same day as a Christmas party is still pretty high…

All About Timing

As for the best day to celebrate your birthday? In the Northern Hemisphere at least, July 28 was found to be the ideal date due to its distance from all other celebrations and holidays. July can be an unpredictable month when it comes to weather in the Southern Hemisphere, but we have to admit that those born in the middle of the year have a distinct advantage when it comes to receiving gifts – no chance of a Boxing Day sale bargain or recycled Christmas gift!

We’d be really interested to see whether the same study carried out in Australia would have completely different results, but regardless, you can’t change your birthday. If you’re born in December, it’s probably best to embrace the Christmas music and make the most of the festive mood!

  • When I was a kid a friend of mine had their birthday on 25th of December and I always said that instead they should celebrate their half birthday. I worked out that June 25th was in my mind the most awesome birthday to have as your birthday was exactly 6mths after Christmas. Blow me down when my daughter was born on June 25th. She loves her birthday.

  • I don’t know what it is but my husband and I always seem to get into big arguments on my birthday so it can get quite depressing. My birthday is also on the 13th. Unlucky for some?

  • I hate my birthday as it’s the anniversary of my father in laws death so no one is overly joyous. As my children are not in my care (not by choice) and unless it’s my weekend with them the only person I have to celebrate it with is my grieving husband. I always get bad news from my mother who for some reason finds the worst things to tell me. I’m over 30 and don’t need presents. It’s just another day and my age dial goes up. Having disabilities so not having many friends mean I am pretty much alone on my birthday.

  • I do think December birthdays tend to merge with holidays and Xmas celebrations; and any other month preferred, especially summer or spring months.

  • It would be strange to have your birthday on Christmas day but not sad.

  • Mine and my partners birthdays are towards the end of January. Sometimes there will be gifts we want to buy for Christmas but it puts you over the budget, or something you want to get is sold out and comes back in stock after Christmas so it’s handy we can gift it for our birthdays instead.
My daughters birthday is in the middle of the year which breaks up a birthday from Christmas which I think is helpful too.

  • I don’t think I’d like to celebrate my birthday around Christmas. But I agree with most other people, birthdays are what you make of them.

  • I celebrate my birth month not just the day

  • I think your birthday is what you make it, unless a bad turn of events happens on the day. We can’t choose our birthdays!

  • I think the only bad day to celebrate your birthday is if another event, sad occasion, happens on the same day ….

  • I would hate February 29th as a leap year birthday really only comes around every 4 years.
