After a careful examination of yesterday’s events, it appears there is a trend to Big W’s closures that could mean your local store is in danger!

After they announced the first of their closures yesterday, the question on everybody’s lips was which of the remaining Big W stores was next.

With Auburn, Chullora and Fairfield confirmed to close in January, a map of the stores on the chopping block revealed a startling trend that means your local Big W could be joining them.

A Clear Formula

The three stores that closed were underperforming but there could be a simple reason for their poor sales figures. Each is located in a smaller shopping centre, in close proximity to another suburb where there is a large Westfield with its own Big W.

Not only that, but they have poor public transport links resulting in reduced accessibility and convenience.

“People might be like, why would I go to a smaller centre and buy a shirt when I have a better experience at a bigger centre,” retail expert Dr Gary Mortimer told news.com.au.

“When you have big Westfield complexes close by, there is a pull towards those centres and away from smaller centres.”

Making Predictions

There are a number of remaining Big W stores that have similar problems when compared to the three stores that are facing closure.

Big W Rockdale, Big W Top Ryde and Big W Mount Hutton are all within a short distance from larger, more profitable branches and could be the first to go when the company makes further announcements about the future of its stores.

Dr. Mortimer said that a change in the way consumers shop is partly to blame for the trend.

“There were (shopping) centres built in every suburb,” he told news.com.au. “Now retail does’t rely on a physical shop. It’s the middle ground that’s in the firing line. These are centres that are too big to be small and too small to be big.”

Whatever the reason, more closures are definitely on the horizon, so make the most of your local Big W while it lasts!

  • My local Big W is super popular so i cant see it closing down at all.

  • Big W is the best. I would be so upset if my local one closed down.

  • I love Big W, prefer it to Kmart. Once a big retailer like Big W goes, so do the other retailers. I avoid the closer Big W in the Westfield and travel further to the next Big W in a smaller centre. Much more enjoyable, easier to park, even better range of products in stock.

  • I hope ours is safe. So many other stores are closing in our shopping centre. And I agree – with new shopping centres opening in every city/town, it’s impossible for them all to be successful.

  • Sad that so many people will lose their jobs.

  • Sounds like most things, closing smaller shops so we all have to shop at big stores, I feel sorry for the workers, but more people are shopping online so i guess they need more people at distribution centers instead for packing orders.

  • Well, if they decide to close so many stores, it means they are not making enough profits. I hope it won’t happen to my local Big W, because I love buying books there. :-)

  • they should keep the local ones and close down the ones in the westfields/larger shopping complexes. I prefer to shop in more convenient less crowded shopping centres as it is a more enjoyable experience and I would prefer to support the smaller local to me shops.

  • I hope our local Big W isn’t at risk !

    • I agree – the prices and the range at Big W makes shopping there a pleasure.

  • I hope the local Big W stays open – it is the only one in the centre and removed from others in the vicinity.

  • Perhaps but I, not a big fan of their range either

  • Maybe! The economy is a bit uncertain. It will depend on their business decision making.

  • I doubt ours will close.

  • I suspect those in Adelaide might as their Distribution Centre less than an hour away from Adelaide is being closed

  • I only have larger stores near me so I think they will be ok.
