Did you know that 1 in 3 women are diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85? Did you know that there are over 20 kinds of different cancers that can affect us at any stage of our lives?
You may be one of the fortunate ones that never experience such a monster of a disease, though unfortunately we have all had someone very close to us that has been affected.
If you could knowingly prevent cancer, would you? Thirty percent of all types of cancer could be prevented by making a few changes to your daily life. See below the five small steps you can take to help prevent cancer:
- Quit smoking:
Smoking is a leading cause of cancer. It causes cancers of the lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, bladder, liver, pancreas, stomach, cervix, colon, and rectum, as well as acute myeloid leukaemia. If you are a smoker, take the first step by visiting the help to quit website. - Protect your skin from the sun:
The main cause of all types of skin cancers is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. Be sun safe and cover up by wearing a hat, sunglasses and applying suncream. - Maintain a healthy diet:
Mums are fascinating creatures. They will go to great lengths to prep meals for their kids but when it comes to their own food intake they usually take short cuts. Why? You deserve a healthy meal as well to be the best functioning parent you can be. Try and plan your meals for the week in advance and make sure you have all the ingredients ready to go. - Maintain a regular exercise plan:
As a mum, this can be quite difficult to do. It might have been easy to go to the gym when you felt like it before having a child, but now it’s not so easy to drop everything. So why not make it a habit to go for a daily walk. Not only is it a form of exercise, but you are also getting yourself and bub outside in the fresh air. You will feel so much better for it and so will bub. Half an hour a day is all you need. - Reduce your alcohol intake: Yes we all love a wine or two, but lets work to keep that number down as much as we can!
So let’s help support the Cancer Council by purchasing a daffodil pin at your local retail outlet or by making an online donation on their website.
Every dollar received to the Cancer Council helps to support the research of cancer, cancer prevention and patient support.
