American Actress Jennifer Garner has shared some of her top secret advice for mums and dads-to-be.

With over a decade of parenting her own three kids – Violet, 10, Seraphina, 7 and Samuel, 4 – the 43-year-old says she has learned plenty of parenting lessons.

Sharing her insights with late-night host and soon-to-be dad Seth Meyers, Jennifer was very candid in her experiences.

During a recent episode of the show, Seth asked her, “Was there any advice you wish someone had given to you before you had your first?”

Jennifer said, “Everyone gives you so much advice,” she began. “There are a lot of ‘experts’ out there and as much as you think, ‘I’m going to follow what this person says, I’m going to follow what that person says, I’m going to read this book and I’m going to have this birth plan’—it’s not up to you, dude.”

“It doesn’t matter. Let it go. Don’t worry about it,” she urged. “You’re going to struggle. It’s going to suck just like for everyone else.”

“Just know in your head this is all going to go to hell in a handbasket,” she warned in a joking tone.

The actress, who separated from her husband of 10 years, Ben Affleck last year, told E!News recently that she continually juggles the evolving and ongoing challenges of motherhood.

“The great thing about kids is the minute you show up in your own house, your kids don’t care what you’ve been doing all day.  They just go, ‘Hey, mom—she did this,’ ‘I want that’ or ‘Can we do this?’ or ‘Let’s read this book,’ so they force you to be in the present.”

  • Finally, a celeb who keeps it real! You can tell those who actually parent as opposed to those who ship their kids off with the nanny when it all gets too tough! Love this lady!

  • Yes, parenting is difficult. No two children are the same. You may need different techniques for each child. They don’t all respond to the one type of behaviour correction, they have different developmental stage ages, always different personalities, emotions etc. They often all have different interests meaning you are running in different directions. If it is sport who do you watch if they are at the same time.

  • she is so very true, everyone has the exact same struggles and we all feel like we are failing as a parent at some point, but I think we all come through the otherside of it dont we?

  • Love this, she’s so right! Advice is all well and good but everyone is different as are all children, so don’t stress and take each day as it comes!

  • She’s so right. Parenting can be difficult but we just need to be present and take each day as it comes.
