The fitness blogger and social media star has responded to critics who say she shouldn’t exercise while pregnant.

She’s only 27 years old, but already Kayla Itsines has built a multi-million dollar empire on a message of fitness, health and loving your body. Famous for her Bikini Body Guides, Kayla’s recent pregnancy had fans questioning whether she would be able to keep up with the demands of her job in the spotlight, but she’s proved that nothing will slow her down despite facing backlash for her decision to continue to exercise.

Putting Things Into Perspective

After countless comments on her Instagram posts and videos, Kayla decided that enough was enough. Sharing a workout pic to her account with her growing bump on display she cleared up the confusion about the dangers of exercising while pregnant. “I want to put this in perspective for you,” she said. “For the mums who have had kids, you would be the first to agree that there are plenty of things heavier than 5kgs in your house…no, the weight is not too heavy…no, I’m not hurting the baby.” Kayla went on to say that many pregnant women have toddlers to care for, grocery shopping to do etc. highlighted through her friend’s experience, pointing out that many of those tasks would be far more strenuous than her modified exercises.

All About Adjustment

With her baby due in May this year, Kayla acknowledges that modifying her routine, particularly adjusting her exercises to ensure they are safe for pregnancy, has been tough but necessary. “I have been active my whole life. As long as you have clearance from your doctor, you can work out, you can use weights. Just because I’m standing in a gym with a crop top and shorts doesn’t make it any less safe to lift something.”

We really admire Kayla’s approach to pregnancy – it doesn’t have to stop you doing the things you love, they just might require some modification to keep you and your baby safe. Exercise can be a great way to feel like yourself again when things get tough, but check with your doctor first to make sure you’re good to go!

  • If you are super fit when you become pregnant and you dont have any risk factors then there is zero reason to stop exercising.

  • Kayla obviously know what is is safe for her to do. As is stated in the article you can usually keep doing what you were doing prior to pregnancy – within reason. Your body should alert you when you need to slow down. You need to be aware of that and be sensible.

  • Its better for you and the baby to exercise but shouldnt be too strenuous. But better to talk to a physio than follow an online program, its easy to hurt yourself.

  • I did not exercise one bit… oh, except for throwing up into a bucket 24/7. I was unable to get off the couch, let alone do anything else. But I would think a professional exerciser would know her limits. So let her do what she wants to do.

  • You just need to take care and not overdo it.

  • she said she’s modified her exercises for the safety of her baby, so obviously being sensible about it all.

I kept up my regular gym workout out until 6 months with my first and only 3 months with my second due to complications.

  • If you continue to do all that you did prior to becoming pregnant there is no problem, in fact you will have an easier birth. The problem arises when you start doing exercises you have never done before when you are pregnant.

  • I am a group fitness instructor & I exercised a lot through my 5 pregnancies. I was teaching step classes up to 4 weeks before & in the gym the day before I gave birth every time.

  • She was fit prior so shouldn’t be a shock to her body.

  • The main thing is that she’s feeling good mentally and physically good

  • You do what you body tells you, someone who is already involved in a fitness routine before pregnancy could probably handle a bit more than say me who isn’t into fitness at all

  • I think she’s right. A little caution and it should be fine.

  • Exercise is normal at all stages – pregnant and not pregnant.

    • I have friends that are athletes and they continued their activities through pregnancy.
