Becoming a Mum is the most amazing thing in the world, you’re given this cute little bundle and it’s love at first sight.

There are so many happy and bubbly feelings, though, even if we don’t want to admit it, we’re a little bit worried. It doesn’t matter if it’s your 1st or 10th child, we all feel like this and want only the very best for our bub.

Safety is paramount and us Mummas will do everything possible to keep our little ones safe and snug.

Here are some ideas to help keep your baby safe and sound and ease some of our worries:

  1. Read safety requirements and reviews

Take the time to really look into all the bits and pieces you will need for your little bundle of joy. Read reviews and safety ratings on all items you will require including cots, toys, prams and carseats. A great place to start is the ACCC website – they’ve reviewed many products and have guides to ensure all baby goods are safe to use.

  1. Familiarise yourself with current Safe Sleep recommendations

When it comes to newborn sleep, as a new parent you’ll try almost anything to get that little bundle to sleep for as long as possible. It will almost become a fixation, so the thing you need to do whilst in a bit of a sleepless haze is ensure you read up on the latest safe sleep practices. A great place to start is the Red Nose website – they’ve got the most current recommendations to help reduce the risks associated with SUID.

  1. Wrap up that baby like a professional (or a burrito)

Speaking of sleep, one way you can help bub settle and drift off to sleep is to wrap them up. The good news is that not only does it make your baby feel safe and snug, it also helps to reduce the risk of SUID. There are LOTS of great products on the market, though if you’d like to do it the old school way, the Raising Children Website will give you a great guide. It also includes recommendations of what to dress baby in underneath the wrap. Just remember, once bub is on the verge of rolling, it’s time to give away the wrapping.

  1. Check the car seat

When on the search for the best car seat for your child you ALWAYS need to ensure it meets the Australian and New Zealand standards – AS/NZS 1754.

In Australia, the law is that all children are to be in a properly fastened child restraint until the age of 7 and rear facing as a minimum to 6 months, though there are LOTS of calls for this to be extended due to safety. Children can not sit in the front if the vehicle has 2 or more rows of seating until the age of 4, though once over 4, they can only sit in the front if all other seats in the vehicle are occupied by younger children (please note they still MUST be in a car seat until 7 years, even if they must sit in the front).

  1. Look after their skin

Babies have the SOFTEST most KISSABLE skin, it’s just so perfect that we want it to stay that way forever (if ONLY!). With such sensitive and soft skin it’s important to take extra care of it.

Did you know that babies skin is more susceptible when it comes to harsh chemicals? Their skin is thinner than an adults and the protective barrier of their skin is not fully developed, so it’s super important to use gentle plant and mineral-based products where you can. Take a look at the ecostore baby range products designed especially for little bubbas.

  1. Keep the house as clean as you can

It’s a given that you want to keep your house as clean as possible when you bring that new baby home. None of us want to expose our babies to harsh chemicals if we can help it! It’s important to choose products that list all ingredients on their labels and do not contain unnecessary dyes and perfumes which can often be derived from petrochemicals. That’s where the amazing products at ecostore come in VERY HANDY. They have a full range of plant and mineral based products that are tough on dirt, but gentle on skin, to clean and protect your home.

  • Keeping your kids safe is a non stop life commitment. Safety was a priority when first bringing them home. We spent many nights up worrying and quite a few trips to the dr to ease our minds. It’s tough, but most of us get it done.

  • Great article. I just noticed that the acronym for sudden infant death syndrome has changed to include a “u.” I’m assuming that must be “unexpected” or something similar.

  • Love QV products to keep my baby’s skin soft and gorgeous. No need for soap in bath water – just water…babies don’t get that dirty and the soap makes their skin dry out. If needed use a bath oil like QV Baby.

  • An article disguised as an advert for Ecostore, I do like their products, who has time for keeping the house spotless in the first 12 weeks, good luck to you if you can. I would also add try to keep yourself chemical free and any visitors, strong perfumes, lipsticks and other body products can have chemicals too, and yes Ecostore has a nice range of them too and for baby. I could not wrap my baby up because it was so hot and I did not have air-con, he slept with his arms up all the time anyway.
