The parents of Keli Lane, have broken their silence surrounding the conviction of their daughter for murdering her baby.
Sandra and Robert Lane, who live in Manly in Sydney’s northern say they don’t believe their only daughter is capable of killing and that a great miscarriage of justice has occurred.
Speaking in an interview on 60 minutes, Keli’s mother Sandra said:
“I don’t think she’d hurt anybody to be truthful, especially a child.”
Her daughter Keli, was jailed for at least 13 years and five months for the murder of two-day-old Tegan in 2011. The former elite water polo player has always maintained she gave Tegan to the infant’s father, with whom she had a brief affair. Unsure of his actual name, Keli identified him as being called Andrew Norris or Morris.
The baby girl has never been found.
Keli’s parents broke their five year silence yesterday, following news that the evidence in their daughter’s case is being reviewed by The Bridge of Hope Innocence Initiative at RMIT University.
The couple acknowledge that their daughter’s story sounds “improbable”.
“(But) the truth is stranger than fiction isn’t it,” Robert Lane said. “We love her dearly even though we’ve been in a difficult position. All we can do is support her.”
Robert continued in the interview, saying that his daughter had been “demonised in the media for 10 years” and that both he and his wife believe there was a miscarriage of justice in Keli’s trial.
Keli’s high-profile trial saw the prosecution arguing that the then 21-year-old murdered her baby so she could realise her dream of competing in water polo at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000.
60 Minutes also revealed that Kelli, who never gave evidence during the sensational trial, would take the stand if she was granted a retrial.
Speaking via a phone call which aired during the program she said, “I want to be heard and I want to be heard in full.”
