Kelly Clarkson has admitted she smacks her three-year-old daughter.

The singer and mum of two, spoke about her tough parenting style during a recent radio interview, shares The Mirror.

She told listeners she was smacked as a child, and that she does the same to daughter River Rose. Kelly is also mum to son, Remington.

Kelly said: “My parents spanked me and I did fine in life. I’m from the south y’all so like, we get spankings.

“My mum would call the principal if I ever ended up in the principal’s office and give permission for her to spank me.

“I’m a well rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.”

She says she warns River Rose before spanking her and believes it has been an effective deterrent.

She said: “I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on the bottom if you don’t stop right now, this is ridiculous,’ and honestly it’s really helped.

“She doesn’t do that kind of stuff as often.”

However Kelly is aware that her strict parenting approach is not popular with everyone.

Speaking to 98.9 The Buzz radio station , she said: “The tricky thing is when you’re out in public and people think that’s wrong or something.

“I find nothing wrong with a spanking.”

We all know smacking is a very controversial topic! It has even been banned in some countries. Do you agree with her reasoning?

  • I suppose smackinga child’s hand in the process of preventing them from touching something will be frowned upon. I would rather do that than them injure themselves because quick enough to stop them any other way. If your child injures him/herself you cound be interrogated for hours, perhaps of the period more than one day. I know of a little boy who just managed to hook his finger in the kettle cord and it fell on top of him. They were in a rental house that very narrow benchs could be reached from ither side. His Mum took him a cold shower both toddler and her fully dressed before ringing the hospital ( 6 doors away from carpark) as she knew that part of the first aid treatment. The country hospital did the initial treatment then sent them to the burns unit in a large hospital by ambulance. The Mum said it was horrific being “interrogated” by social workers (not just one) a few times. The next house they moved to they made sure most of the benches were against a wall, wide and a bit higher than normal.

  • I was spanked as a child. And when I got children of my own I decided on a certain point that I don’t want to spank as I don’t think it works and I don’t think it has a positive effect on the relationship with our kids. So when you ask me, No, I don’t agree with her method, but who am I to judge her ?

    • I agree – it does not work – violence never works for open communication and respect.

  • I do not agree with this parenting style at all as I do not believe in spanking – it is an outdated technique we have never ever used.

  • As long as it is a slap on the backside with appropriate force, that is fine. It’s the excessive force and number of slaps and beatings on other parts of the body and/or with implements such as wooden spoons, belts, hoses, rolled up newspaper and other weapons that are wrong. Such beatings can cause permanent injury or even death.

  • There is a huge difference between a smack on the bum and beating a child. I very rarely smack my son and if I do then its more because I needed to seriously get his attention whdn his life was in danger than because he’s been naughty. I don’t think a smack for bad behaviour works very well and really it just teaches kids how to hit people. But they’re her kids so its her decision. I’ve got better things to do than sit around judging her for it.

  • I have not spanked or hit my child. My technique was to talk it out. I too was occasionally spanked as a child and I turned out fine too, so I do agree with some of Kelly’s reasoning.

  • I don’t agree with her at all. And spanking is not fine!
