Hello!

For a family known for oversharing, the Kardashians have been curiously tight with details since June 15, when Kim gave birth to her daughter with Kanye West at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. The baby, born three weeks early, was widely reported to be named Kaidence Donda West (West’s mother, Donda, died in 2007).

But as the official birth certificate shows (see below courtesy of CBS News), the couple have given their daughter a compass direction as a name. The baby’s name is officially registered as North West—no middle name.

In an interview with talk-show host Jay Leno on March 28, the mother-to-be laughed off rumours of the name North West. “That is not true. That is not one of the names on our list,” she said, joking that she preferred Easton West. “I think that’s cute.”

A source close to the new parents told news site TMZ that the name is a metaphor for “up” and is more inspirational than directional. “What’s North of North?” they have reportedly told friends. “Nothing.”

North West, who will be called Nori for short (after all, North is a boys’ name in North America), “is the prettiest, tiniest thing with a full head of straight, dark hair, a cute little nose and Kim’s lips,” a friend of the reality star tells People magazine.

The unusual name choice, North West, may be West making it clear that this child is not going to be part of the Kardashian machine—a new interview with W magazine indicates a lack of closeness between West and his girlfriend’s “momager”, Kris Jenner.

Then there’s his knack for making a statement. The fact that he named his latest album Yeezus, a mix of his nickname, Yeezy, and Jesus, indicates he boasts a more than healthy ego. One of the tracks on his new album is titled “I Am a God.”

And with her distinctive name—some might call it gimmicky—North “Nori” West will always stand out as the rapper’s daughter. He’s fond of putting his stamp on those close to him; in W magazine he acknowledges directing his girlfriend’s much-maligned fashion choices. “Nobody can tell my girl what to do,” he tells the mag. “She just needed to be given some platforms of information to work from.”

Then again, perhaps they just love nori rolls!

Have celebs gone too far with names?  Should this baby have been a K-free zone?
