The classic Kmart phone jail is not new but recently sales of the gadget have been soaring as mums grapple with the after-effects of home-schooling and COVID lockdowns.
It’s often hell to get my kids off devices and after having them at home for months, the reliances on screens have sky-rocketed in our home. So I’m besotted with the Kmart phone jail, which has done wonders in keeping our technology under lock and key.
Go Directly To Device Jail
The Kmart phone jail is literally a mini prison for your tech. It comes with a real lock and key and its main function (as described on the Kmart website) is “to keep your screen time low by locking away your smartphones in this phone jail.”
Mums all over the country are snapping up this cage for only $8 and they’re putting it to some creative uses.
Bring Back Family Time
This cute little jail is big enough to fit a few mobile phones so you can lock up devices for some quality family time. Just make sure you remember where you put the key.
One mum uses the Kmart phone jail to imprison her kid’s Xbox controllers, to limit their addiction to gaming.
The New Way To Control Gaming
The clever mum posted to Kmart Mums Australia Facebook group saying:
“$8 in the kris kringle section. Love it!
For those wondering; it’s too small to fit a tablet/ipad but easily fits 2 xbox controllers.”
The post has exploded and has received over 1.4K comments, with mums frothing with excitement over the anticipation of a few sacred device-free hours.
Lock Up The Hubby!
Many mums are already brainstorming all the ways they could use the Kmart phone jail.
“You need this for the remote control when the TV is off!!,” said one.
“Great elf on the shelf prop, he could be sentenced to 23 days imprisonment…,” suggested another.
“I need this for the chocolate,” added a sweet-toothed mum.
“I’m wondering if I could stuff my husband in there, lol,” giggled one mum.
A teacher was even tempted to buy one for her classroom.
I Need One For The Ipad
Many mums called on Kmart to launch a bigger version.
“It’d be good if they released a bigger one for the iPad haha,” said one more.
