Kmart is launching Afterpay.

The retail giant has confirmed that customers will now be able to pay for their purchases in a series of installments.

“We will be making a formal announcement about our new partnership early next week, but can confirm that customers will soon have the option to use Afterpay for online purchases,” a Kmart spokesperson told Yahoo Be.

Afterpay works by customers paying for their purchases over four installments. If you pay on time, you’ll have nothing else to fork out, but if you miss a payment, you’ll be charged a late fee.

“At Kmart, we’re on a mission to make everyday living brighter for our customers, by making products more accessible for everyone,” the spokesperson continued.

The news caused a wave of excitement across social media, with customers ecstatic that they will be able to shop at the store and pay for their items over time.

  • I waited for Kmart to get Afterpay for ages and finally it happened…. What a shame to try the service only to find out on top of my $300 purchase price i would be billed nearly $50 to have it delivered to my address?! What a cop-out! Other major retailers have FREE SHIPPING for orders over a certain amount, others charge $10, very disappointing Kmart!!

  • It’s a great idea but would be better if the service was offered in-store as well, perhaps at the lay-by counter. Would be good if Target follows.

  • Isn’t that just like having a lay-by but you take it home before it’s paid for. Not for me but some people may like the idea.

  • Really? I’m not an Afterpay lover. I figure if I can’t afford it at the time, then I don’t need it. And KMart — why do they need Afterpay? Really? Their stuff is so cheap, if you can’t afford it… I’m just concerned at the amount of credit card debt people are already in without adding to it. Not for me, but I guess for those who love it, it’s a bit exciting.

  • I just have not caught onto the afterpay buzz. After all that’s what my credit card is for. Just small payments over a month period and boom. I get points, earn rewards and never incur any interest. It’s called responsibility fellow millennials

  • Not at all a fan of this. Hate the thought of buy now and pay later – the old layby was a far better incentive to pay for the goods up front before you got them. One of my acquaintances is still paying off a holiday she took 5 years ago on a similar scheme – she wishes she never went!

  • Don’t think this is such a great idea because it encourages people to buy things that they can’t afford (the essence of people always being in debt with a credit card). And imagine the problems for KMart if/when people don’t pay!. I’m still for old fashioned values – save until you can afford it. If you can’t afford it then you don’t get it. Also we all have too much stuff.. so can’t see this doing the environment/world resources any goo deither… but I guess it might make a few people in KMart a little richer than they already are.

  • I don’t like it, in terms of worrying about the problems this will cause for people who find it hard to control their spending. What seems like an easy fix to buy something ends up putting stress on people long term. It’s better to only buy something if you can buy something outright. Otherwise wait till you can.

  • No, I’m not an Afterpay lover. I only buy something when I can pay it, when i can’t pay it (yet), I won’t buy it (yet).

  • I wouldn’t think there’s many things at Kmart that you would need this for, I can see why some people end up in trouble
