Hello!

Kmart has responded to pressure and removed a kids’ wedding dress costume from stock after a Melbourne mum complained that the dress-up was “beyond inappropriate”.

The costume, priced at $6, was a white wedding dress and came with a veiled headband. It was sized for kids aged between 4 and 6.

The dress was pulled from the shelves two days after a petition was launched on Change.org by Shannon B.

“Kmart Australia regrets the decision to range the bride costume,” a Kmart spokesperson told 7 News.

“It was not intended to cause offence and we sincerely apologise. We have made the decision to withdraw this product.”

Surprising?

It’s actually quite a surprising move by the giant retailer, as the petition hadn’t exactly gone viral. In fact, it had only attracted 124 signatures.

Offensive

The petition stated:

“Each year, 12 million children (girls as young as 6 years old — the same size as this ‘costume’) are sold or married off by their family without their consent. That’s one million child marriages per month!”

“That equates to 23 children every minute or 1 child every 2 minutes. If this continues, 150 million more children will be married by the year 2030.

“Child marriage means child abuse and torture in its worst forms — paedophilia, child rape, child slavery, child sex trafficking.

“Tell Kmart this is beyond inappropriate and offensive and that they have a social responsibility to pull this item off their shelves immediately.”

Disappointed

I understand Shannon’s point of view. However, my little girls love playing weddings and would absolutely adore dressing up in a child-sized wedding dress. So I’m actually disappointed in their decision to remove the dress.

I guess Kmart was concerned that the whole thing would explode out of control and it wasn’t worth the risk.

  • I get what shes saying but lets be honest here….a child dressed as a child is enticing to a paedo.
This woman is looking at these dress up items in an adult way and putting a sexual slant on them when children will just look at them as what it is…a brides outfit and they have seen the photos of Mummy and Daddys wedding and probably grandma a gandpas wedding and maybe they have even gone to a wedding. They see it all the time on tv and THAT is what they are wanting to dress up as. Let them be children and have the freedom that they deserve. I dressed up all the time as a bride when I was a kid. I also dressed up as a nurse which I wouldnt have wanted to be in real life because i hated needles and blood, I dressed up as a cowboy…not a cowgirl…I was a cowboy and no I have never wanted a sex change and I am 100% straight. Its called pretend and games of pretend are all part of a childs normal development. Leave them be and check your outrage at the door.

  • It is just a dress up isn’t it?

  • In my opinion they’ll just wear a good dress and pretend to be a bride..

  • I understand that it is a huge problem in the world but projecting that onto kids that would have no idea about this? Not sure

  • I can’t see the issue with this I dressed up as a bride as a kid as I thought it was fun and my daughter loves the idea

  • Seriously!!! As a little girl I dressed up like a bride or bridesmaid often with my sisters and friends. PCness gone way too far.

  • Of for goodness sake, by that argument you should also get rid of any costume because some person will come up with some reason that it’s offensive

  • Gone a bit too far on this one. Understandably there is these issues going on around the world but for kids to play dress ups?? Come on.
