One woman has sparked a bit of an online debate after asking for ideas for her stove top. She certainly never expected this reaction!

Sharing in a Kmart group for ideas and hacks the young woman asked for ideas to cover her stove top.

“Can I please see ideas of what people have to cover their stoves? Needing some inspiration for mine.”

When asked why she would want to cover it the young woman replied she rarely used it and just wanted to cover it over to prevent dust and create some extra space. The woman also clarified she has no children so there is no danger involved.

She added, “I live in a small granny flat, I don’t have kids and I hardly use it, I don’t see why there’s a problem if I, myself, am choosing to cover it if I don’t use it.”

The comments of judgement and disdain soon started flooding in…

“I don’t use mine all that often… but I’ve never been concerned about it collecting dust… I’ve never seen a stove cover, and never seen a dusty stove…”

“Just seems really, really dangerous to me!”

“It’s a working appliance and can catch fire if improperly ignited!”

“That’s Such a fire hazard?”

Meanwhile some comments were actually quite helpful suggesting the woman get a wooden chopping board to sit on it similar to below.

Do you think it is too dangerous to store things on top of your stove top or do you do something similar?

  • Why would it be dangerous if the stove isn’t turned on???

  • I think the wooden chopping boards look fabulous on the stove tops. I don’t think they present a hazard as no one is using the stove. I use mine just about every day, so I can’t use the chopping board

  • I have never thought of a stove cover, we use our stove a lot so not practical for me. I do love tbe wooden chopping board cover idea though.

  • If i didn’t use mine i would have a cover, a massive chopping block would be perfect, extra bench space would be perfect in a small space.

  • I like the idea, it looks nice but I prefer to keep my stove top clear just Incase! And I don’t think I could be bothered moving anything off the top of my stove when I want to cook…

  • It looks pretty but I always keep stuff away from the oven – I’m too nervous!

  • Makes me nervous. I keep my oven clear.

  • I always store on top of my cook top as my kitchen is small with only one bench space

  • I don’t see a problem with it. If it’s not a safety hazard and there are no children. I think it’s fine to cover it. Some people need more space in tiny kitchens and it could be made aesthetically pleasing.

  • Well I guess it depends on the hazard at hand if there is one.

  • We have a piece of laminate that was made to fit our stove top to create more room as we have a small kitchen, and I would be lost without it!

  • Stoves in caravans have covers that are made to fit , they are metal and the same colour as the stove. This gives more bench space, you can probably get one to fit a stove in a house as they are the same size as a regular stove.

    • The ones in caravans also act as a “splash back” in place of tiles. There is usually no or if you are lucky very little bench space in a caravan apart from above the little fridge unless it is attached to the sink that you usually have a bucket outside to catch the water from it.

  • It would have to be never used to do that. But I have hotplates raised a little on my stove, and they have metal covers. No problems.

  • why not cover it if turned off and not used

  • She’s asking for ideas for stove top. Not to get judge or lecture she shouldn’t cover it.
