One woman has sparked a bit of an online debate after asking for ideas for her stove top. She certainly never expected this reaction!

Sharing in a Kmart group for ideas and hacks the young woman asked for ideas to cover her stove top.

“Can I please see ideas of what people have to cover their stoves? Needing some inspiration for mine.”

When asked why she would want to cover it the young woman replied she rarely used it and just wanted to cover it over to prevent dust and create some extra space. The woman also clarified she has no children so there is no danger involved.

She added, “I live in a small granny flat, I don’t have kids and I hardly use it, I don’t see why there’s a problem if I, myself, am choosing to cover it if I don’t use it.”

The comments of judgement and disdain soon started flooding in…

“I don’t use mine all that often… but I’ve never been concerned about it collecting dust… I’ve never seen a stove cover, and never seen a dusty stove…”

“Just seems really, really dangerous to me!”

“It’s a working appliance and can catch fire if improperly ignited!”

“That’s Such a fire hazard?”

Meanwhile some comments were actually quite helpful suggesting the woman get a wooden chopping board to sit on it similar to below.

  • Great idea. It’s surprising how much more bench space you gain.

  • I think it looks really good in all the photos.

  • It’s funny because I was just at my friends house and they have cereal boxes around there gas stove top and I mentioned that it was quite hazardous but my mate seem to think it had been there for years like that and it was okay :) . I keep things clear from my stovetop except I have metal covers for the hotplates.

  • I don’t see a problem – they have similar things in motorhomes …. we took one on a week long trip and I was so pleased to have a cover to give me extra working space! As long as you are careful, and it is removed before using the stove top, it’s a great idea!

  • I’ve seen stove top covers in caravans numerous times, can’t see how this is any different.

  • looks alright to me but yeah just be a bit more careful since its wood.

  • Think it’s a great idea to create extra bench space and can see no harm in it – for me this would be a real pain as I use my stove top 3 times a day.

  • Only a issue if you are not smart i have a tea towel over mine never caught fire yet and my knobs are on top if they were not I’d not place things on it

    • I wouldn’t ever put a tea towel over a stove top….but then my daughter is a firefighter and she would kill me if I did anything like that!!!

  • I don’t see it as a problem if she has no kids. Those are actually cute ideas!

  • If she lives alone and doesn’t have kids visit then I don’t see how it could be dangerous.
