We all want our girls to have confidence, right?

I want my girls to not let anything stand in the way of their hopes and dreams, though when you think about it, a lot of what we say can come off in a derogatory manner…..

Take the line “like a girl”, it may not feel like an insult, but it is insulting.

I know this is a clip that was made by a brand for the sole purpose of being shared, though I feel there is a strong message in there which needs to be communicated to our young girls.

Take a look for yourself:

What do you think? Do you use this line without even thinking about it?

If I am completely honest, I am guilty of using it more than once….

  • How sad that some people have such wrong perceptions about certain behaviours connected to our gender !

  • “Like a girl” implies women are weak, or too feminine, or emotional, or icked out easily. It’s not true, women can be tough and fearless, smart, determined, ambitious, hard working, I could go on.

  • Really appreciated this video clip. I have definitely used this phrase and had quite a few laughs about it as my grand daughters state back to me “but I am a girl”. They all have a sturdy back bone. Thanks.

  • amazing video. i would never use this phrase against anyone, anyway. i have heard people jokingly say this too me and i always say that duh i am a girl, (kind of like, so what is your point?) girls rock so there’s no offence there. can i just say that i am so used to hanging out with guys and before i met my hubby and best friend, my best friend was a guy, so they all just saw me as one of the guys anyway lol

  • I don’t think it is an insult, we are girls

  • It’s interesting to see how older children and young adults perceive “like a girl”, although I don’t think it will change the way I use it. I suppose it’s in the context that you use it.

  • Very true. Let’s empower our kids, not criticize or belittle. We all need to be conscious of what we say.

    • Well said, couldn’t agree more with you.

  • Its about the delivery and how you say it.

  • I saw this on a talk show yesterday, quite thought provoking.

  • It’s not so much what you say, but how you say it. I’ve used the phrase “like a girl” or “big girl’s blouse” or similar, but always in a joking way.

  • i love this video. powerful message. its true though different phrases get different conotations and its hard to change them on a global scale.

  • I don’t have a daughter to say that to but I’m guilty of saying it to my son as he can be over-sensitive at times. Interesting clip. These types of sayings will still continue until we start to change the portrayal of the stereotypical differences between males & females. Woman as still seen as the fairer weaker sex whereas men are seen to be the macho testosterone fuelled sex.

  • I don’t use this phrase myself but can see how it could be insulting to a boy, not so much to a girl lol

  • I hate the line “….like a girl’ when it is used as an insult to someone’s ability, strength etc. I was a very strong-minded girl, and I’m a strong-minded woman. My girls are too. Watch out to anyone who uses “…..like a girl” in my presence!

  • I use this term, others use the term, I’m a girl and I’m not insulted or offended by it.

Geez when did we all become so over sensitive and have to make an issue out of every little thing, brush it off and move on, there are plenty of ‘real victims’ in this world, being told you run like a girl isn’t up there with any of them.
