Hello!

Yes, Lily Allen used the b-word – but it’s not what you think. In a new interview, the British singer and mother of two small girls said she came out of self-imposed retirement because she found life with her babies too boring.

“I didn’t get … I mean, I’m not bored by my children. Actually, I am, you know,” she told Hello! magazine. “The oldest one has only just started talking now. So it was really hard because you’re spending all day, every day, with two human beings that can’t communicate back to you.”

When she married builder Sam Cooper in June 2011 and had daughter Ethel that November, she changed her name to Lily Cooper and said she would be living the quiet life and focusing on her family. Daughter Marni arrived in January 2013.

However, she told Hello, “for someone like me, when my whole existence is about communicating and response and reaction, it was quite frustrating. I felt like I needed to get out and do something else with my time.” Hence the professional name change back to Lily Allen and a brand new album, Sheezus.

Getting the family she wanted had been a struggle for Allen, now 28, who suffered a miscarriage in 2008 when she was expecting a baby with Ed Simons of the Chemical Brothers. After she started dating Cooper she announced she was pregnant but at six months contracted a viral infection and gave birth to a stillborn boy.

At the time, all she wanted was to spend time at home with her kids. “I thought I’d be a really happy mum just sitting at home, playing with my kids, that was my dream,” she told France’s NRJ Radio.

“I love my children, but I’m a very impatient, busy person naturally so two babies, neither of them can talk, it was quite boring! Staying at home all day talking to people that can’t talk back.”

She’s always been outspoken but still it’s brave of her to say what a lot of mums sometimes think. Can you relate?

  • I can understand what she means. I was elated when my baby started smiling because I’d. Finally get some positive feedback. It will be great when he communicates further.

  • We all need adult friends/partner and some good adult conversation in our life.
Personally I don’t think life with kids is boring. Even when they don’t talk, they sure communicate.

  • Can certainly relate to this. We moved house and I was there with 4 children under 6 while hubby was still moving jobs for 3 months. No great adult conversation was just so hard to contend with. Had no radio or TV – just 4 littlies. Try it sometime and you’ll agree with Lily.

  • I can relate to some of her comments – it’s true babies don’t talk back – but I wouldn’t be bored staying at home to with two babies. Time goes so quickly, it won’t be long before they’re not babies anymore!

  • Love the way Lily Allen says what she thinks and doesn’t care what people think. Good on her, and she’ll probably be a better Mum doing what makes her happy.

    • Love Lily Allen too! Brave to share her views too!

  • I think she is being really honest, and just because she gets bored occasionally, doesn’t mean she loves her kids any less. Now time spent with them will be more enjoyable for her, because her other interests and needs are met. It’s wonderful to hear a celebrity talk about life with kids in a real way.

  • Good on her for being honest !! There truly isn’t any right or wrong with feeling this way !! I’ve realised everything all feeling good and bad are normal !! I wish more people to be so honest so people don’t have this false sense of parenthood being amazingly great all the time. It just isn’t !!
