Woolworths has been forced to admit that its Lion King Ooshie collectibles could present a choking hazard for young children.

Supermarket giant Woolworths has been forced to admit that its current Lion King Ooshie promotion could present a dangerous choking hazard for young children.

The 24 characters, including Mufasa and Simba, have already created a stir, competing with Coles’ Little Shop 2 collectible range that launched earlier this month.

A Warning For Parents

An FAQ page on the Lion King Ooshie’s promotion page outlines the risks that the plastic figures could present.

“The Lion King Ooshies are for persons aged 5 years and older,” it reads. “Adult supervision is advised for children. Lion King Ooshies are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children under 3 years of age.”

While most parents don’t need the warning to help them identify the items as choking hazards, Woolworths’ statement is a reminder of the risks associated with these collectibles no only for small children but also pets.

Just last year, Coles was also under pressure to respond to concerns from parents about the risks of their Little Shop minis.

“All of our mini collectibles have been independently tested for compliance with Australian standards,” they said in a statement. “This testing is specifically aimed at reducing risks and demonstrating the quality and safety of materials and products.”

So as you set about completing your collectibles sets, it’s worth finding a safe place to store your minis where little hands and mouths can’t find them!

  • I feel like all these silly campaigns have been giving away things that could be a choking hazard. The tiles woolies launches last time and both rounds of minis. The best incentive to date has been the free books at big w not only does it create hype to visit the store but it educational for the kiddies too. If I keep any of the minis or ooshies I store them in a container above our fridge and old get them out when my little one is being supervised.

  • Storing them in the box thingy, on a shelf too high for little hands.

    • The case is for storage and little toys of course need diligent supervision.

  • Just don’t give them to young children, or keep them up high. They probably appeal to older children anyway?

  • Mine are stored up on a high window sill out of everyone’s reach. (Please excuse my dirty window – hasn’t been cleaned on the outside for a few months)

  • Of course they’re a choking hazard – could they not realise that in the first place?! Mine are kept on top of the fridge out of harms way.

  • Thanks for the warning, I hadn’t considered that. My 8 year leaves them laying around and my 2 year old could easily pick them up

  • It is a good thing for a warning to be issued and for people to be alert to all possible chocking hazards.

  • Of course all small objects are a choking hazard. So is a grape, a shopkin, a bead, a popped corn and the list goes on. We as parents are responsible to only introduce such items when our kids are able to cope with it.

  • In a little basket for now. That’s not good that they are a hazard I can see why they’re small and like soft little squishy rubbers.

    Reply

  • Well of course they are. They are small collectables. I don’t need to be told this and that’s why from day 1, my eldest has to keep them away from her baby sisters reach.

  • I’ve just got one. My daughter uses it on a pencil.
Quite understandable that it’s not suitable for young kids.

  • I DEMAND they start putting these warnings on grapes! And popcorn! Seriously what isnt a choking hazard anymore ????‍♀️

    Reply

  • That’s my first thought for all these collectables! Usually we don’t collect them but they were too cute this time. We keep them up on top of our pantry cupboard for now. We will only get them out if I’m going to play it with them

  • Well duh! I mean come on. Seriously? What parent genuinely needs a warning for this? Just look at them.

  • yep these things can be a bit dangerous.
