Magical Park turns a normal urban city park into a digital fantasy land playground.

Utilising a mobile device and the free Magical Park app, playgrounds are transformed into an exciting and engaging world for kids and families to explore, creating a blended virtual world seen through the app once they enter the boundaries of the magical park.

Kids get to interact and explore a fantasy world where they have to herd kittens, run away from the bad fairy or come face to face with a giant T-Rex – all in a local park using your smart phone or tablet. Combining outdoor play with technology can motivate kids to get off the couch and be more physically active.

PLA Western Australian President Joanne Smith said “there is a growing concern about technology and the detrimental impact on children’s health and wellbeing. Our challenge is to think of new ways to motivate our children to exercise. Magical Parks does just that by embracing technology to get kids outdoors and moving around.”

Magical Park is aimed at age’s six to 11 and the vision is to get them moving outdoors in a safe environment. Kids who have used the game have said that they would not only prefer to play mobile games outside, but they also love that they get to run around and play.

Parks Week is on 10-25th of March and communities across New Zealand and Australia are celebrating their Parks. Contact your local council to see what parks in your area are “Magical Park” friendly.

What do you think of this interactive way to get kids outside? I guess it is really no different to Pokémon GO?

  • Can’t we just take the kids to the park and let them use non tech play equipment? This s sad.

  • I think exactly the same. Except for geocaching, that is a sort of treasure hunt outside and you need the GPS or you will never find the cache! :-)

  • We should not have to use technology to get our kids from the couch !
I wouldn’t like my kids to use their smart phones or tablets in the park to be honest.

  • LOL… I don’t know of any kids up to the age of 12 that don’t enjoy the park. If they could live there, I am sure they would. Even at home, my daughter loves to go outside, she gets annoyed with me when I tell her no (usually because it’s way to hot or the recommended time to stay inside).

  • Whatever happened to the imagination of the children today. We didn’t have technology amuse us. We made our own fun the same as our parents did. We played in parks for hours, looked for birds, different coloured flowers, butterflies, tadpoles swimming in creeks etc. We always had drinks and snacks for a picnic morning or afternoon snack. Sometimes we also had a picnic lunch.

  • Wow, the lengths some people will go to. I never had an issue getting my kids to play at the park, my grandkids are the same. I feel sorry for those kids that need to be bribed to have fun at the park

  • I’ve never struggled to get my son outside to play. He’d live at the park if I let him. I think I can save the space on my phone for other stuff.

  • Yes, like Pokemon Go it will fascinate kids for a while and then it will be forgotten. :-)
