A man who slammed his car into a Sydney home, causing a pregnant woman to lose her baby, could be out of jail in less than three years.

Vanessa Farrugia was 20 weeks pregnant when Jason Mansweto’s car smashed into the Windsor Downs house in June 2014.

Her horrific injuries led to her baby, a little girl she called Bonnie, dying in utero the next day and to her undergoing forced labour and delivery induced by medication.

Mr Mansweto was driving an unregistered, restored car, when he lost control and the steering wheel came off.

On Tuesday, in Parramatta District Court, Judge Jeffery McLennan jailed the motor mechanic for four years and six months, with a non-parole period of two years and nine months, reports 7 news.

Ms Farrugia, who was thrown back into the house and knocked to the floor, suffered terrible injuries including fractures to her skull, face and foot, a large deep cut to her forehead and leakage of spinal fluid under her skull.

She’s been left with a permanent loss of her sense of smell, and had a craniotomy for her brain injury, plastic surgery for her facial injuries and numerous other operations.

Mr Mansweto was jailed but the judge said the sentence imposed could not turn back the clock the last three years and the irreparable damage done.

“It cannot give Bonnie the life she never had,” the judge said during sentencing.

Mr Mansweto could be out in less than 3 years.

Do you think that is fair justice?

  • that is very sad. hopefully she can still find some sort of peace

  • The injuries caused to the Mum and unborn baby should be separate case – not combined with the driving offences.

  • The sentence doesn’t seem to fit the crime – but the judge was right in saying that nothing can turn back the clock and bring Bonnie back to life. Do hope this lovely lady will be able to move on with her life and have many happy things happen to her.

  • Keep the jerk in there. He doesn’t deserve to be out on the streets. He’s done enough damage, I simply call it murder. He took a life because of his stupidity and plus the fact he was driving an unregistered car. This dear woman lost something special, her baby, bonnie, may she rest in peace. But not only that the extensive injuries he caused her could have also led to her death, but instead she has also sustained permanent injury and loss. I say, leave him in jail and let him rot. People like him cause accidents but never seem to suffer loss or hurt, their antics and stupidity kill and maim others who are left victimised and with loss for life. Don’t give him a licence, don’t let him anywhere near another vehicle, that should be the punishment he needs to receive. I hope his conscience, (if he has one) haunts him for life and the memory of what he did to this lady, her baby and family bothers him and constantly reminds him of what he did, forever. What’s wrong with our judicial system and judges? The system is far too lenient and the sentences some of these people receive only adds insult to injury. I hope your health improves Vanessa and you heal physically, but especially emotionally. Blessings to you.

  • Poor woman! 3 years for everything he did to this woman? No, it doesn’t look good to me either. :-(

  • This seems an inadequate sentence.

  • He never should have been driving the car!

  • How can 3 years be enough of a punishment without factoring in the loss of the baby
    This mum had horrific injuries
The car was unregistered the steering wheel came off
This is his fault he knew it was wrong to drive that car
