Hello!

In the battle of pooch vs partner, it looks like the four-legged one is the winner.

Everyone knows that a dog is man/woman’s best friend. But according to a recent survey by the Kennel Club, one in five people would rather have a dog than be in a human relationship.

Half of the respondents said they loved their pet more than people because ‘dogs don’t let you down’, whereas human relationships can be unreliable. It seems unconditional love and unwavering excitement when you walk through the door, counts for more than flowers and dinner dates.

Pooch Eases The Pressure

Out of the 2,612 dog owners surveyed, about a quarter admitted that having a dog made them feel less pressure to find love.

We know some dog owners struggle to leave their pets to go on holiday and many choose dog-friendly destinations and accommodation so they can take their furry friend along with them.

Benefits Of Having A Dog

“There certainly seems to be a growing number of dog-lovers who would rather share their lives with a four-legged friend instead of a human partner,” said Bill Lambert, a spokesman for the Kennel Club.

“This could be due to the numerous benefits that come with dog ownership – from the psychological to the physical.

“Dogs help their owners unwind, whether that’s with a daily walk in fresh air, or with a cuddle on a sofa. They can also be great listeners, help their owners combat stress, and can play a part in improving the health and fitness of their two-legged counterparts.”

Your Pooch Can Help You Find A Partner

However, for those dog owners who are keen on finding love, the findings show that having a pet is actually help a person find their kindred spirit.

Over one-fifth of respondents said that they had been asked out on a date or found the love of their life while walking their dog.

Best Dogs To Attract Love

And if you’re looking for romance with the two-legged kind, then the best dogs to attract a partner are beagles, springer spaniels, golden retrievers, corgis and German Shepherds.

“This is quite unsurprising when you consider that dogs are a great ice-breaker, when strangers may otherwise not look twice at each other, and that we tend to have very positive associations about people who love dogs,” said Mr Lambert.

Also, doggie owners attract doggie owners as 21 per cent said they were more likely to date someone who also had a dog.

  • I currently have a dog and a partner in my life and it would be impossible to choose one over the other. However, if my partner left or died, I would be quite happy in the company of just my dog

  • I think it all does depend but in reality wouldn’t your partner be choosing to be alone than a life with you and pooch?

It’s a pet and family member and I don’t get along with family either but we accept family at end of the day so why not a pet.

  • My late husband bought my dog that I have now. I suffer with manic depression and I had a small dog but when she passed away I suffered really badly. I refused to get another one because I didn’t want to replace her. My husband decided a dog was what I needed and he got Soxy for me. I didn’t know how I would feel about her but she is perfect. When my husband passed away from cancer, I would find myself talking to her and crying into her fur. She has given me some peace and someone to talk to that doesn’t show pity or tell me to get over it. She is perfect and I don’t want another partner so yes, my dog now comes first.

  • I am a dog person, but not over my partner. I don’t have a dog at present, and not sure if I would have one after my partner passes until I get rid of my wanderlust.

  • This is a hard one but I guess in the long run, if you’re really a dog person you should find someone who likes animals or doesn’t mind you having some because otherwise you won’t be completely happy. For the record we own a springer spaniel and he is a complete nut job lol.

  • Yep dogs are so loyal and always happy to see you. They don’t eat much and don’t just laze around the house.
