Matt Moran last year teamed up with Kidsafe to launch the “unconventional oven”.

Matt put two lamb loins inside the car, using just the car’s extreme temperature to cook them. When he removed the meat and carved it he said they were “totally overdone”.

Kidsafe spokesperson Kellie Wilson said “It’s estimated that each year approximately 5000 children nationally are rescued from hot cars.”

“Seventy-five per cent of the temperature rise occurs within the first five minutes of parking the car and 90 per cent within 15 minutes,” Ms Wilson says.

The video states: “Reaches temperature in minutes, maintains stable temperature throughout. This is no ordinary oven – it’s an ordinary car”.

As a father, Matt said he is “gobsmacked” at the number of children left in cars. “I couldn’t believe it, I think Australia needs to know it is not safe, at any point in time, to leave a kid in a car. It is like an oven,” he says.

Watch the video for yourself:

“Every year across Australia, over 5,000 kids are left unattended in cars. To prove just how hot the sun makes a parked car, renowned chef Matt Moran literally cooked a meal in one.”

Are you shocked at how quickly the meat cooked through?

  • This is so brilliant. Really makes you think.

  • I know a car gets extremely hot in a short space of time but I was blown away how quickly the meat cooked and it was well done, not just browned on the outside

  • I’ve seen this before and it’s quite shocking. Unfortunately though, the people that need to see this, and adhere to the rules, are not watching such videos. Kids are still being left in cars on hot days, far too regularly.

  • Why doesn’t the Federal Government make it compulsory to have a thermometer fixed inside all cars?
I have dogs who travel with me and I have a thermometer in my car so I can keep and eye on the inside temperature whenever they are with me.
It is such a simple solution.
Maybe MOM should start a campaign to rectify this.

  • i have tried to post 2 comments and it has not shown up. Good on Matt. It is so dangerous leaving anyone in a car babies, kids or adults. Cars are like ovens especially when parked in the sun.

  • Well done Matt. I can’t believe stupid parents leaving their poor little ones in cars. Disgraceful!

  • Hopefully this will make people realize how quickly leaving kids in the car can turn fatal.

  • this is so relevant as he says. Good on you Matt

  • Saw this last year on the TV – it is still relevant today – I never left my children in the car and don’t see why anyone does today. You cannot guarantee how long you will be away – extra customers in the bank, or the shop when you only wanted a bottle of milk. The other thing you cannot guarantee is that no-one will run into your vehicle – or here in Melbourne, decide to steal it. Hope there are no deaths from toddlers overheating in cars this summer.

  • What a great and scary example. He’s right don’t leave your kids in the car, take them with you. I know it may seem inconvenient and easy to just whip in somewhere quick, but you can also get easily distracted or held up and that can result in dire consequences. Be smart, and care for your children, you only have one chance.

  • This was a fantastic demonstration of how heat affects interior of the car. Yet people still leave their children in the car. Our message needs to be DO NOT LEAVE CHILDREN IN THE CAR not do to leave children in the car on hot days

  • This is the first time I’ve seen this, although I’ve had other friends tell me about seeing it. A very powerful demonstration, not just about our children but our animals too. Thank you Matt and Kidsafe – I hope this reaches every home in Australia to get the message through.
