A passenger’s brief visit to Brisbane while infectious with measles has prompted Queensland Health to issue an alert.

The alert said a young man from New Zealand travelled on Virgin Airlines flight VA46 from Denpasar, Bali, to Brisbane on Sunday, July 24.

The man spent time in the Brisbane Transit Lounge before taking a connecting flight on the same day from Brisbane to Wellington on Virgin Airlines flight VA104.

Symptoms

Dr Heidi Carroll from Queensland Health said anyone who might have come into contact with the man at that time needed to be alert for the symptoms of measles.

“The initial symptoms of measles include fever, lethargy, runny nose, moist cough and sore and red eyes,” she said.

“This is followed a few days later by a blotchy, red rash which often starts on the face and then becomes widespread over the body.”

Dr Carroll said the symptoms usually started about 10 days after contact with the infectious person, but were known to occur between seven and 18 days after contact.

“We would expect that anyone who has caught measles as a result of this contact would be starting to show symptoms now, or over the next few days.”

She advised people who may have come into contact with the patient and who are uncertain of their immunity to measles to speak with their GP immediately.

“Measles is one of the most infectious of all communicable diseases and is spread by tiny droplets through coughing and sneezing, but is actually infectious for four days before the rash appears.”

For more information on the measles virus visit the Queensland Health website or speak to a registered nurse at 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) any time, any day.

  • It looks as though we need to regulate that people cannot enter Aust. they have had the necessary vaccinations. There has been other cases of diseases brought in during the last few months.

  • Scary! Also in Perth 7-10 days ago there was a case of measles. A backpacker brought it here coming from Bali too. And the illness started to spread through backpackers.

  • i really hope the man did not know he had measles when he flew as it is totally irresponsible and selfish to spread it around.
