A wall within walls has been built to protect Hey Dad! star Robert Hughes.

Inmates have not been kind to the former television actor since he arrived at Goulburn Correctional Centre after being convicted of assaulting four girls in the 1980s and ’90s.

A new book Australia’s Toughest Prisons – Inmates reveals, NSW Corrective Services contracted a “builder to alter the jail” with a “special screening of thick, tight wire” for the paedophile’s protection.

“It went up because … his lawyer kicked up a big stink and went hard at everybody,” a prison officer told author and News Corp journalist James Phelps.

“He argued for a reduced sentence because of the treatment [Hughes] received.”

Hughes was sentenced to more than 10 years behind bars on 10 counts of sexual and indecent assault on the girls, one of whom played his daughter on the sitcom.

According to a prison officer, Hughes was reduced to a “stinking mess” on his first day in Goulburn, where inmates “waited patiently” for him to arrive.

“I’m not sure how they knew he was coming,” a guard told Phelps for his book.

“But they knew. And they had all armed themselves up with s–t and gone out to meet him.”

During one yard transfer, one inmate yelled out “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here”.

When Hughes’ lawyer Greg Walsh applied to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal to have his sentence reduced, he cited the “inhumane” prison treatment of his client.

In September, 2015, Walsh told the court Hughes had also been targeted with boiling water

Hughes lost his appeal, and then the wall went up.

  • He should not get special treatment because he was a celebrity.

  • Some would say this is Karma!

No sympathy for him and am disgusted that he gets special treatment in jail – where was the special protection for the kids? I say remove the wall and let Karma do it’s thing.

  • Well, it’s known that paedophile’s don’t get the best treatment from their inmates because their behaviour is seen as evil and lower then low, I don’t have much sympathy for him either.

  • He should never be released – perhaps the wall should be removed and he could suffer the same way those he preyed upon have had to suffer all their lives.

  • no sympathy from me either!

  • I hope he’s as scared as the children he assaulted.

  • I also think his sentence should have been much more severe.

  • In my opinion his sentence is far too short. There was 10 sexual assault charges
He should have got at least 3 years mininum for each charge = 30 years with NO parole or early release for good behaviour.

  • This is what happens when people who abuse children go to the jail.
