Hello!

At 37,  Meghan Markle was the oldest Royal bride in British history and now she’s quickly moving into the next chapter of Royal life as a soon to be Mum.

Statistically, women over 35 only have a 15 – 20% chance of falling pregnant with each cycle.  So how did the newly crowned Dutchess fall pregnant at 37 so quickly (possibly even a honeymoon baby!)?

There is a biological reason why having a younger partner, like Harry, would increase her chances.

As women, we are renowned for wanting to ‘change’ our men, make improvements, mould them to suit our needs.  Well, it’s not our fault really, we are programmed to do this at a biological level!

When egg meets sperm and the process of baby making begins, the egg has the ability to fix imperfections within the sperm.  It has the ability to optimise certain aspects of the genetic make-up to best suititss requirements.

However (as with making changes in a male partner!), fixing these imperfections takes a considerable amount of energy and effort.  As we age, our eggs have less energy available to make these improvements.  If the changes were necessary to facilitate fertilisation, then a pregnancy won’t eventuate.

Having a younger partner, with younger sperm and less imperfections, makes the egg’s job much easier.  So eggs, which may be older and lacking the energy to make improvements to the sperm, have less (if any) changes to make.  This means a healthy, viable pregnancy is more likely to establish.

No, this doesn’t mean you need to find a toy boy to be able to conceive in later years, but I do find that male preconception health and sperm quality can be the missing link for women trying to fall pregnant over 35.

Meghan and Harry are the picture of health and happiness as they await the new arrival.  Only question next, will there be a new Prince or Princess!

  • Does the age of the father actually make any difference? It might if the father is elderly

  • Either way, here’s hoping the baby arrives safely.
