Hello!

If you’ve ever spent a minute, an hour or a lifetime obsessing about your size, your shape, your hair or your face, you’d be in good company with Melissa McCarthy.

The Bridesmaids star Melissa McCarthy is certainly the exception to the rule over in glamourland (er … Hollywood) where ‘stick chick’ is the goal. Embracing her size sees her as something of a champion for plus-sized women.

Her perspective on her body has been an evolution but she’s arrived at a refreshing perspective. In a recent front cover feature in More magazine she opened up:

“I’ve been every size in the world. Parts of my twenties, I was in great shape, but I didn’t appreciate it.

If I was a 6 or an 8, I thought, why aren’t I a 2 or a 4? I bought into it—I should be taller, thinner, have better hair.

But I think that’s part of being young. Now, especially with kids, you lose any sense of time or energy to worry about all the little stuff.”

Here here we say – love your words! We all need reminders like this, to be a bit kinder on ourselves, stop and appreciate the good things we have right now instead of focusing on what we’re not, what we wish we were or what we don’t have.

Thanks Melissa! We’ll come and see your next movie. (She’ll be starring in The Heat, a buddy comedy with Sandra Bullock.)

Have you managed to find peace with your size and shape? How long did it take to get there?

  • It’s so true, when I was 20 I was the thinnest I’ve ever been but still found faults in myself. You need to see the beauty in yourself and appreciate it.

  • Being an older mum I struggle with aging. The damage I did to my skin in my twenties with the sun and solariums is showing horriedly in my 40s. However, can’t change the past so try to stay positive

  • I struggled with body image for many years, I hated on media for trends and whatever their current body push was, but I’m okay now, but yes, it took some time to get there.

  • I’ve battled with my weight all my life. Ten years ago, I got down to 63 kg, which was a good weight for my 167 cm height. Then my life went to hell in a hand-basket, with personal ill-health and family tragedy, and my weight skyrocketed to over 100 kg. Then I had lap-band surgery, and I got back down to 78 kg before more ill-health sent my weight upwards again. Last time I checked (3 months ago), I was nearly 95 kg. I haven’t been on the scales since then. I’ve finally accepted where my body is now, and if people don’t like the look of my body, then that’s their problem, not mine. If you want to lose weight, do it for you, not for anyone else. In the end, it’s only you that you need to please.
