Almost four million Australians will receive a one-off payment to help with the rising costs of their power bill.

Vulnerable and low-income households can expect to receive cash handouts of $75 for singles and $125 for couples.

Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has promised that if the legislation passes, payments will be deposited into the bank accounts of about 3.9 million eligible Australians by the end of financial year.

Mr Frydenberg denied the measure was a “cash splash” describing the payments as “responsible, targeted spending”.

“This is money [that’s] going to go into people’s pockets to help meet the cost of their next power bill,” he told Channel Nine.

Those receiving the one-off energy cash handouts include 2.4 million people on age pensions, nearly 750,000 people on disability support pensions, carers and single parent payment recipients, as well as eligible veterans.

Will you be one of the lucky families?

  • And sadly the cost of power is still an issue.

  • A one off payment would be great relief for some bit what about in the long run? They need to stop shutting down power houses! This is why energy prices are so steep!

  • As a pensioner it will help for the current bill – what happens further down the track? At least the Liberals are not so gung-ho on renewables so that we are eventually all left in the dark

  • I don’t think it will make a significant difference.

  • Vote the Libs out! What a ridiculous band-aid solution to an ever growing problem. Need something ongoing and realistic. Hope this mob are gone soon.

  • Hardly going to make a difference in anyone’s life with prices of everything going up all the time. They might as well just give it straight to the power companies, after all they already spend billions in subsidizing coal production. Just a weak effort to try and win some more votes before an election.

  • That’s a huge cost to the government that may be better spent elsewhere. It will only make a teeny tiny difference to families. Is it worth it?
