Hello!

This morning I watched a short video posted by Miranda Kerr – talking about how she is going ‘beyond the hour’ for this year’s Earth Hour.  It seems she’s into all things organic and has pledged to continue to buy organic fruit and veges from local growers in order to reduce her carbon footprint.

See her video pledge here.

This pledge comes off the back of the announcement by Earth Hour today Miranda Kerr has taken on a global ambassador role for 2011. Miranda has committed to switching off the lights for Earth Hour, using her profile globally to promote Earth Hour, and to taking action for the planet ‘beyond the hour’. Perhaps it’s because she’s a new mum and now has an added incentive to ensure the future of the planet or maybe she was always environmentally aware … whichever way you look at it, it’s good she’s bringing the issue to the forefront.

“Each of us has a responsibility for the sustainability of our planet and each of us can make a difference if we choose to do so,” Miranda said. “I am pleased to be a global Ambassador for Earth Hour this year and I personally will be participating in Earth Hour on 26 March 2011, and will continue to adopt sustainability practices thereafter in my everyday life. Together we can make a difference.”

In 2010 hundreds of millions of people, in 128 countries and territories across the world, took part in Earth Hour. This year Earth Hour asks people to commit to an action, big or small, that they will sustain for the future of our planet, when they switch off the lights at 8:30pm Saturday 26 March.

Earth Hour has introduced an online platform www.earthhour.org/beyondthehour that captures and allows individuals, governments and organisations across the globe to share their actions and thus act as the tool to showcase and inspire commitments to protect the planet.

“This year I will be going beyond the hour by continuing to recycle and by buying organic produce from local farmers markets thereby cutting down on the pesticides and insecticides used on our planet and reducing food miles,” Kerr said.

So this has got me thinking – what will our family do for Earth Hour this year?  But more importantly, what can we commit to doing ‘beyond the hour’ to make our planet a place our children, grandchildren and those after that, will be able to live happily.

Let’s do a Mouths of Mums pledge for Earth Hour this year – COMMENT ON THIS POST if you’re going to do lights out on March 26.  There are over 11,000 Mouths of Mums members so that would definitely make a big difference. Besides, we all know that life by candlelight is a beautiful thing!

  • Well, the time has passed and to be honest we’ve never done this and really it’s only plus is that people might think about not wasting resources – much better to turn off the aircon, heating, TV and all the other appliances.
