Hello!

My little mans one in less than a week. Every morning between 530 and 630 he wakes up screaming for a bottle. Does anyone have any tips to get him out of this. Some background: hes primarily on solids having 3 main meals a day with small snacks in between. Up until a few weeks ago he was having 4 bottles a day – hes a big boy once grew 7cm in 2 months – hes now down to 2-3 bottles a day cows milk not formula. Hes goes to bed between 630 – 730 but recently will be wide awake until atleast 830. He has 2 naps a day. A long one starting around 10 – 11 and then a short one in the afternoon l. We are trying to reduce the number of bottles he has getting ready to wean him off completely. Any suggestions would be amazing

  • It actually sounds completely normal, all three of mine were the same. they do go through different stages and will learn to communicate more effectively (not just screaming), my two year old still wakes up demanding boob!

  • I use to leave a little container of cut fruit for my son to climb out of bed and have, he did this for years, it gave me a chance to get my milk up at the time. He is a teenager now and still loves fruit. You could try giving food before the milk too, he may just feel hungry. Or make sure he has a bedtime snack, I used to give my son a cracker and sippy cup with rice milk before story time.

  • sounds like a growth spurt. Why not give your health nurse a call?

  • Sorry not advice my 2 year old cannot live without boob and sucking bottle. It’s not always a bad thing.

  • Depending on how long he has been doing this for he may be going through a growth spurt but honestly at a year old he may only need 1 nap per day instead of 2, my daughter stopped having naps totally when she was 18months it depends on him tho as u know they are all different lol I would definitelytry reducing his naps tho the more tired he is the more he should sleep. Hope this helps good luck

  • He is still quite young as most kids don’t get weaned off until around 15 months. It would be a comfort thing. Kinda like how most adults like their cup of tea/coffee in the morning. If his sleeping through the night and not waking up until 530am then youre doing great. My 5 year old still wakes me up 2-3 times a night for a fresh cold cup of water. It could also be because his thirsty, may try giving him water in a sippy cup/bottle when he first wakes up

  • If he’s truly hungry, then he needs that bottle. But to get him to have it at a better time, try giving him something later in the evening so he’s still full during the night.

  • I have a 2.5 years old daughter and she also wakes up screaming for her bottle. I don’t have any idea how to stop giving it to her. I feel the bottle is a kind of comfort to her… So I give her cow milk mixed with water. Good luck with your little one.

  • Is he really hungry this time in the morning? Could you give him breakfast or a snack really early? 1 is still normal for some kids to not to through the night. Or Maybe that will be the last bottle to go after the other day bottles. Totally sucks he wakes so early!! Good luck

  • If he is needing a bottle perhaps reduce the amount of milk or replace with water in the morning. My children all had a night bottle until 2 and the morning one we replaced with milk in a sippy cup.

  • He may need a later bedtime and a later dinner

  • Maybe he’s going to bed too early. If he’s still awake at 8.30 try putting him to bed around 8 / 8.30. If he’s having an afternoon nap then maybe he’s waking up too late in the afternoon so maybe pushing back his bedtime will help him get to sleep sooner and enable him to sleep a little later in the morning. There’s no need to cut out his three bottles just start getting him to drink his milk from a cup. At 1 they should still be having approx 200ml of milk three times a day.

  • It sound like he is just used to the routine, basically he is hungry and crying for his breakfast . My kids just just ate and drank when they were hungry and the clinic nurse advised to give them a balance of milk and solids . Perhaps you are having dinner very early so therefore he wakes up early for his breakfast. Have a bit of a later dinner to test and see if he wakes up later than . At least it won’t be 5.30am !

  • all I can do is wish you luck x

  • A few things to consider that might help. Did his sleeping patterns change at the same time or soon after you started to change bottle times? Is he eating the same amount or more since cutting that one bottle? How much water is he consuming? He might be more dehydrated than he is used to if he has dropped that one bottle.
I assume the screaming in the morning is new, which is why its worrying you.
Have a look at when your little one is having those 2-3 bottles, and also the timing of his last meal of the day. He might be a little bit hungry or thirsty when its bedtime, hence taking longer to get to sleep and then very hungry by the time he wakes up in the morning?
You could also try swapping to his favourite sippy cup for day time milk to help make a physical and visible difference for him to help him get used to milk changes

I hope something here helps, goodluck!
