My boy is 6 and half months and we started solids 1 month ago, but he is so constipated since then. I tried: only veggies and fruits puree, water, prunes puree, prune juice, colonel, gripe water, massage, warm bath, coconut oil in his food…I am also breastfeeding, no formula, I am running out of ideas and the GP said it’s normal to be constipated when started on solids. But I thing it’s beed too long now…

  • Sounds like you are doing all the right things. It takes awhile for their digestive system to get used to processing solids, keep going with the pureed pear and prune juice and give a little bit of water too

  • I’m a mother of 5 and I have used 5mls of gripe water (buy it at Cole’s or Woolies) $5 for like a year’s worth and almost everytime any of my kids get constipated I’ve used this and by the next day theirs usually an explosion or two lol I hope this helps it’s so painful watching our little ones struggle


  • I put 2 pitted prunes in the food/fruit net for my daughter and it really helped get things moving for her :)


  • When my daughter was the same age, we would give her small amounts of brown sugar water… worked wonders.. took about 30 mins to an hour.


  • I remember my daughter in law used a little brown sugar dissolved in warm water. Worked for my grandson


  • If you’re really concerned find another dr and get a second opinion. It is normal for baby to experience some constipation when they begin solids but it can also be a sign that they’re having too much food, try cutting back to one snack a day of some fruit or veg and increase your breastfeeding. Ideally baby shouldn’t be having 3 square meals a day until they’re 18 months so slowly work your way up to the 3 meals and 2 snacks as digestion gets better.


  • If its been a long time since he’s passed – days, you may need to get him to a doctor. Just make sure that as the weather warms up, you are giving him plenty of water with his solids, and stay away from solid foods that aid in constipation. It will soon pass.


  • I would try mango as that is something that should help as I remember a pharmacy guy told me that helps with constipation so worth a try.


  • It takes a while before babies get adjusted to solid. Try giving different things plus lots of tummy time. Also I can slowly massage baby’s stomach sometime


  • Way back when my sons were little we used prune juice followed by warm water. If your Doctor is
    not concerned you need to trust he knows it will be ok,


  • both my sons had colic and bowel issues. Try NAN. 100% Whey formula makes it bareable and they dont get as bound up. I tried everything including prescription meds, Nothing worked 100% and some thing just made it worse. Time is somtimes the only thing that is going to help some kids, our sons grew out of it by the age of 1 – 1 1/2 ish which ment 7pm-5am every single night we were on baby screaming duties. Sucks but true so of nothing helps just wait it out its the only thing.


  • Too much water can interfere with breastfeeding because it fills baby up so that he nurses less. Babies need the nutrition and calories in breastmilk to grow – water has none of these.
    Breastmilk has all the water your baby needs, even in very hot weather.
    When your 4-6 month old baby is learning to use a cup, giving him a few sips of water a couple of times a day (no more than 2 ounces per 24 hours) is fine and fun.
    Once baby starts solids, you might want to give him a few sips of expressed milk or water with his solids – some babies need this to prevent constipation.
    For older babies & toddlers, continue to breastfeed and offer water in moderation (4-6 oz per day). Breastmilk supplies plenty of fluids, so many older babies or toddlers who breastfeed without restriction can get the fluids they need through breastfeeding. Others may need a little water with solids to prevent constipation. No need for a bottle – just offer a cup. Most older babies and toddlers particularly like to drink water from a parent’s cup or straw. In our family, we usually offer a cup of water at mealtime, or when someone else is getting a drink, and let the child choose whether or not to drink.

  • Increase Water and try one veggie per meal time. Sweet potato mash with mashed stewed apple. Water is the key must get the child drinking water in between meals. Breastfeeding is fine but add that water! This helps with constipation. Note that some babies do not poo every day. Everyone is different.
