Listening to an audio book as a family can pass the time nicely.

You can find books of games to play in the car, which might help. Depending on the age of your kids, things like I spy, licence plate bingo, giving them a list of six things they have to spot, can be good. Or audio books if they’re old enough to have an attention span.

Lots of singing and I spy and word games.

We take little cases that I fill with toys especially for long trips.
The toys may be things like
– 2 plastic animals
– mini etch a sketch
– travel connect 4
– toy cars
– small lego set
– stickers
etc.
Anything else that they haven’t seen before that is small and inexpensive.
By keeping these cases just for trips, they get really excited knowing that they get to open them and that there may be new things inside. Although often it’s been so long in between trips that they love to see things from previous trips.

We always take audio books with us. Your local library will have lots. Alternatively download the free ‘Borrow Box’ app and borrow audio books online via your library membership. Just remember to download the books where you have free or lots of wifi.

A packet of coloured pencils or textas
A packet of coloured pipe cleaners
Large wooden beads and a piece of plastic thread to thread them onto
A simple jigsaw puzzle
Finger puppet
Magnifying glass

Worth a try but be prepared for pen to be used inappropriately (ie on seats) so get something that will cause minimal damage. Supply a pencil sharpner if using pencils.

Also word games work ok if the adults can stand it – like i-spy; car numberplate games. like ticking off the letters of the alphabet; and ‘yes/no’ where you ask each other question and can only say ‘yes’ or ‘no’
