Hello!

I’m about to put our 7 month old baby into the same bedroom as our 4 year old & 5 1/2 year old. Any tips for getting the older ones not to wake the baby when it’s their bed time? The baby will generally sleep about an hour before them at night. Thanks.

  • This was really hard for us… I suggest instituting quiet time from when baby goes down, so that the kids are fairly settled before they go into the bedroom. It helps.

  • I hope it all worked out for you.

  • do the nighttime routine outside of the bedroom. settle them down and explain to be quiet as they go to bed. tuck them into bed and pray they sleep well.

  • Could be very difficult. I think you need to think about light and movement as well as noise, since that can almost be more problem than noise. Can you screen the baby’s area so that their ‘space’ is kept as dark and unchanging as possible? And have a bedtime routine for the others (eg story, brushing teeth) that happens outside the baby’s room so they just open the door when they need to go down and sleep. Might need to think about storing clothes outside the area so they can access them without disturbing the other sleepers in the room.

  • Getting into a routine is key. My three shared a room for a time and we played a game at bedtime to see who could be the quietest, worked most of the time. I found the mornings the hardest with three up and going at once.

  • I would think 7 months is probably a bit young to share with 2 siblings and you will have a hard time keeping them all quiet enough not to wake a baby.

  • Bribe the older children to remain quiet when they go to bed. Praise them when they are quiet.

  • Depending on ages. I have a 2 year old and 5 year old in a room. I put the 2 year old into sleep first and then let the 5 year old lie in my bed with a book, once the 2 year old is asleep the 5 year old goes in.

  • That is a tricky one. 7 months is a bit young to be in a share room with older siblings, I think you will have a hard time keeping them all asleep, especially putting them to bed and waking in the morning.

  • A reward chart and explain now let them put the stickers on.. Also a big black marker. If you wake bub then you loose one . Okay when you have six we will go to the park or maccers or somewhere they really like .. And you could make the movies if you where going there a big reward for being really good .. Just took miss three to see Cinderella she loved it .. So if you where doing something really good ,okay if your really good we will do this ,,

  • Good luck, I still can’t even get my 4 and 6 year old to sleep in room without bothering each other. I have to get one to fall asleep in my room then move them when both asleep.

  • This is really really hard – maybe a lot of coaching in advance, about being quiet? Get them into their pj’s etc earlier, so they’re not moving around too much.

  • Try an explain that they need to be quieter when it’s bed time, but other than that maybe if they have to suffer the consequences of waking the baby up and then waiting for bub to go back to sleep that would be more effective in preventing noisy behaviour in the future.

  • Make not waking the baby a game and have bedtime stores in the lounge room

  • If your two older ones enjoy helping with the baby, tell them that they can help you by being really quiet when they go to bed, and they must try really hard not to wake bub. For me, it’s a bit young to put bub in with the older kids, but it may work for you. You can only try. But be prepared for nights when the baby will wake up, it won’t be smooth sailing every night.
