I have a small online page and am thinking of organising to sell some of my stock at market stalls. I was wondering, what’s involved; what are the costs like, do I need insurance, any hints tips or advice. Thanks.

Ask your question
  • Contact the people who are running the market & ask them about all conditions, costs, licences, etc.
You can also walk around the market and ask other stall members how they started off & what’s involved.
Your local council may also be able to help.
    Good luck :)

  • The organisers of the market will have the terms and conditions and fees. If selling food there are further rules and regulations and codes to follow. Good Luck with your venture! :)

  • so how did you go?

  • I have friends that do market stalls. I would check out whether you need insurance and also make sure you have a wide variety and range of your stock for people to choose from. Business cards with your facebook page are a good idea too as even if people don’t buy anything on the day they will keep you in mind for the future.

  • You will need public liability insurance for any markets you do, but you can get a years insurance for under a $100 now,

  • I dont really have any advice but am following as i would like to do the same. Good luck! x

  • Contact the organiser of the markets – each market is unique with its own rules, some have insurance included in the hire cost, others will need to see a certificate of currency from your insurance company in case of any possible claims. Research the area, visit the markets and see what is or isn’t there – no one wants to see 4 stalls of the same boring thing, but go for it!!

  • about $10 to $15

food sales mean a lot of codes to abide by

  • When we sold stuff many years ago, we only had to pay for how many tables we used, no insurance and no other outlays, I guess it depends on the market.

  • We have a huge market 5 mins away and the site fee is well over $100 yet there is another huge one 25 mins away and it is first in best dressed so to speak, people turn up from 4.30 to 5.30 to secure their spot and the cost of a site is about $10, so they really do vary from place to place and area to area. There has been great advice from moms as usual and one mom said make sure your items are clearly priced and I could not agree more. You must be prepared for LONG hours and minim toilet breaks (if at all). Good LUCK.

  • The costs will vary from market to market. I don’t think you need insurance. Having an eyecatching display and clearly visible prices are important to get people to stop and browse.

  • Most market stalls now days need public liability insurance, which is about a $100 a year for a market stall holder. Contact the market in your area to see of they don’t already have someone similar to you.. Also remember that it takes a few markets for people to see your product before they buy

  • It varies quite a lot from one area to the next. Sometimes it will be required that you have your own insurance, sometimes you can piggy back on the local councils existing insurance. Costs can vary greatly too and sometimes they can give you a table for display but in other areas you have to BYO.
I suggest speaking to your local council about it. They probably even have a section on their website with much of the info you need.
    Good luck with it :-)

  • I just rang my local organisation I found there web page. Our stall was only $25.

  • All depends where you are but you have a site fee and have to supply all your own tables.
We did it for a few months but gave it up and we would have to be there for about 5:30 am to set up. I have heard some places charge a fortune just for a stall space
