Hello!

Just a quick question for parents in rental houses. With all the do’s and don’t’s and what-not’s, what can I do to brighten up the place a bit?

I have printed off some pics, laminated them and stuck them on the walls with blutack, but what could I do to make it more bright and open? Budget friendly ideas please =)

  • Some landlord allow you to painst and hang things on the wall, ours doesn’t. So then it comes down to furnishing and adding details as pillows, curtains, blankets, accessories and so on and make sure to make use of the natural light that comes in.

  • It’s a tough one. You don’t want to spend a lot of money and preferably you would want to do things that aren’t permanent so you can easily remove them when you move out. What did you end up doing I wonder

  • We’ve been in our rental for so long now, the landlord lets us do as we please……within reason of course

  • I like mum112217’s answer because these items are bright and cheerful and don’t damage a property.

  • Curtains, cushions and throws to give a new look always make my happy! Flowers or plants also!

  • Bright and open will depend on the home layout and your furniture. The use of some flowers (fake is fine), strategically placed mirrors and some coordinated pillows and throws should help though and, at the very least, will make it feel homely. I repurposed an old mirror for my daughter’s room recently. Painted it white and stuck $3.50 rhinestone stickers from kmart on the edge. Cheap but effective.

  • I use wall stickers in the kids rooms – they peel off I without removing paint. Another way to brighten up the place was colour, in cushions and kitchen accessories. A bright rug in the living room and children’s bedrooms help with sound as well.

  • i was advised not to put blu-tack on rental walls. it will leave oily stains on wallpaper for a start and discolours paints. Anyway you can get removable hooks and make sure that they are the right weight range that you are looking for. That is what we use.

  • cheap bright curtains I think certainly might help!! As for paint, I really don’t think they would let us… The main problem is our lounge room, its like, in the middle of the house, so barely any natural light ect… Its so dark and gloomy =(

  • We have a rental property and have allowed tenants to paint some walls with agreed colour. Shared costs and win/win for both. As a tenant I bought cheap bright curtains put on existing roads and took with me when I left.
