Hello!

My kids are 8 and 5 and currently help very little around the house. I would like to allocate them some regular jobs to help around the house. What kinds of things do you suggest I get them to help with?

  • I didn’t post this question but have enjoyed reading the responses.

  • Good idea .I think It is good to train them to be good helpers young as I think it is a bit too late when they start older as laziness and bad habits might set in . Give them something easy to do such as watering the plants, wiping the table , putting toys back in storage etc and when they do it well you can reward them with a treat .

  • Setting the table for dinner and keeping their rooms clean and tidy is probably a good place to start.

  • Feed pets, put rubbish out, tidy their rooms, our laundry out etc

  • My 4 year old helps me with the following; setting the table for dinner, emptying the dishwasher, folding washing and making her bed. I would think that you could get your kids to do at least that. Perhaps take out the rubbish as well.

  • Some of the things that they could do in set the table for tea, empty the table and wipe it down and also empty the dishwasher. It’s good to get them use to helping others.

  • my 7 year old daughter needs to keep her room tidy and pack up her toys after she has finished playing with them. she also helps set the table at night for tea. on the weekend she often does some cooking and helps with the clean up. work out a reward system. we have a marble jar and set a target eg 30 marbles with a small prize or pocket money. I often add marbles when I see her doing something that she has taken initiative to do. work it out together is the best way

  • This one is easy :-) Let them help with all the little everyday things that Mum (or Dad) has to do regularly: set the table for meals & help clear up afterwards; make their beds in the mornning & help change the sheets when needed; take the washing to the laundry & help sort the wash, hang it out & fold it when dry; collect up the rubbish from around the house on garbage day; unpack the shopping & put it away. These are all things kiddies of this age can cope with and it helps them learn to be helpful & prepares them for life away from Mum when the time comes. I’m sure there are other things that can be added to the list :-) Let your children enjoy being part of the family, including contributing to the ‘chores’.

  • I have a rewards chart for my boys (9 & 11) and they love it. each chore they do I give them a $1 at the end of the week – on the proviso that they do their homework and hand it in. (2 birds 1 stone ;))
    They do chores such as:
    dry and put away dishes
    vacuum
take the rubbish out to the bin
take the bins out to the road and back in when empty
    fold and put away clothes
    wash dishes
put a load of laundry on
    GOOD LUCK!!

  • I get my 11 year old to do the following chores… Feed the dog and keep his water filled up, take the bins out and bring them back in once emptied, empty the dishwasher, Wipe down the vanity in the main (kids) bathroom, clean his room and make his bed and sometimes get the clothes out of the washing machine for me to hang or out of the dryer for me to fold. Hope that helps!

  • There are so many they could help with, filling the toilet paper, collecting the dirty wash baskets, setting the table, packing the dishwasher or drying dishes, bringing in the rubbish bins, collecting the mail, making these beds, packing school bags, emptying lunchboxes at the end of the day. There really is so many small things you could start with and then progress as they go and get used to helping more.

  • Start them off with making their bed and keeping their room tidy.
Then they can set the table.
Unpack the dishwasher or dry the dishes.
    Watering plants. Folding clothes. dusting.
Depends on their ability and your own level of is it good enough for me.

  • Im not really keen on having kids wash dishes as I dont think they do a good enough job and its a health issue.
If you have hampers in the laundry you can get the 5yr old to sort washing. Colours in one hamper and whites in another.
Depending on your clothes line and how tall the older child is they can hang washing.
    Lay tables.
    Clear tables.
    Sweep floors
    vacuum
    Feed pets
    Fold washing

  • Dishes, folding washing, feeding pets

  • Setting table, clearing table, if you have a dishwasher packing and un packing that. If not washing and drying dishes, sweeping floor
