Hi I’m hoping to hear from others mums who have been in the same or similar situations. I have a disk hernia of my l4/l5 for the past almost 2 years.  The pain in my back and legs alleviated a little about 4 months or so ago after I lost a lot if weight from my first child. I am now 9 weeks pregnant with number 2 and am already starting to feel the pain in my back quiet strongly, and legs at night. I don’t have much money to see a physio every week or anything and my husband was worried about this. So I will have to suffer in silence to keep the peace. My son is 2 so lifting is also still an essential part of my daily routine as a stay at home mum. I’m just worried if I’m already in pain what is to come. I have put on 1.5kg already and trying hard to not over gain any weight. I don’t have my family or friends here to turn to. I guess I’m really hoping someone can give me some advice.

  • Disk hernia is painful, add to that your pregnancy I can only imagine how tough and painful it is for you. As most have suggested here physical therapy will help relieve some of the pain, sleeping on your side helps, wearing comfy shoes – I know it’s essential to lift things having your 2yo, but if possible please try to avoid lifting heavy things as it will only aggravate your condition. Very gentle low impact exercise can help too like yoga, in the pool.

  • I would go to see a physio for a one off visit, and tell them you just can’t afford to come back regularly and what advice can they give you to relieve the pain.

  • Acupuncture!!!

  • Rest as much as possible but I know it will be hard when you have a 2 year old son

  • Glucosamine/Chondroitin (Wagner is the brand I used) costs around $40 dollars for a bottle of 200.. It sounds expensive but at 1-2 per day it will last 3 months – pretty cheap compared to a physio. If you are going to try it, give it a good three weeks for it to work. Good luck! Also, great advice on getting treatment at the hospital under medicare. I booked for this as well when I had my pain and was on a 3 month waiting list. I tried the Glucosamine/Chondroitin during that 3 months and ended up cancelling because it worked so well. Good luck :)

  • I would definitely give Glucosamine/Chondroitin a try (capsules work better than tablets and are easier to swallow.). I had severe pain caused by disc degeneration and I swear by it. It took about 1-2 weeks to start working and after that continued to improve to the point where I no longer needed any pain killers – I was really surprised. I know a lot of people are sceptical about it working. My grandfather was a doctor and dismissed it as a treatment until he was in so much pain that he thought it wouldn’t hurt to give it a try. He was amazed at the results. My mum used it as well for arthritis and suggested that I try it too for my disc

  • I went and saw a fabulous acupuncturist who is trained to work on pregnant women. It was the best decision I made with a pain ridden pregnancy.

  • Try putting your hands in the centre of you back and gently pushing your hips forwards (arching back) as it helps so much with the pain as it gives the disc more blood and helps it to heal as i get buldge disc and my dr refered me to the hospital and you can see a physio for free there so ask you dr to refer you or ask you dr do a Enhanced primary care program which give you access to 5 allied services for free as it is covered by medicare – i am in the process or getting my back better so if you need any more info about excercises extra or you want more info just inbox me
