Hello!

We currently bed share but he’s started needing much more space to sleep properly. Any gentle tips to transition to the cot? Thanks

  • Put the cot beside your bed and then gradually move it away from your bed into it’s own room

  • Put the cot next to your bed and start giving him some day naps in there before fully transitioning

  • We started by putting bubs down for his daytime naps in his cot. Once he was comfortable with them, we moved him in at night.

  • To begin with we had bubs in a bassinet in our room. We slowly progressed by putting the bassinet in the cot (with him in the bassinet) then after a few days or week, try putting in cot for day sleeps and then all sleeps.

  • We put our basinet in the cot too and practiced it for day sleeps first. It takes time but a gentle approach hopefully will work well after a period of time. Good luck!

  • I’m not sure about the pretend sleep idea. I agree with something soft to cuddle. The warmer weather may be a good time to do the transition. You may find you baby sleeps in different positions in his cot. We discovered the patch on which they lay gets quite warm/hot. Cot mattresses do not breathe as much as they should. Our of our kids you could put down one of the cot and find him at the other end or even across the cot instead of lengthways. We found if they get too warm and can’t move about they are very restless. You may find they are also perspiring against the mattress.

  • I used to put the bassinet inside the cot. It made the transition easy

  • Perhaps start with a day sleep in a cot, using their usual comforter items. Take time and don’t rush the process to stress you or bubs

  • Sorry can’t help you here – all mine slept in their own cot from the day I brought them home from hospital.

  • This was exactly us 6 months ago. I tried day sleeps in the cot first and then would move him at night sometimes after falling asleep on our bed. But I was happy to do the change slowly. There may be a few painful nights getting Bub to sleep in their own cot as they get used to it. Also I often brought him into our bed from the cot from like 4/5 am for a while
    Good luck!

  • All the answers here are good suggestions – it would be worth trying these.

  • I totally agree – day sleeps in the cot first, and if they have a favourite toy then pop that in with them. You can also try popping them in during the day so they can have a pretend sleep and sort out what way they will sleep. Good luck!

  • Try day sleeps in the cots first and then once he’s used to that start the night sleeps in it.

  • If you can fit the cot in your room that might make the transition easier. Little one may resist any changes so be strong and good luck!

  • i had no issues with my children. the first few times they go in, they might be a little fussy but try to make the cot seem familiar with the same blankets or something like that.
