Hello!

Has anyone else experienced this and how worried should I be? For the last 3 months my 11 year old son has passed blood with his stools. I don’t mean little flecks of blood. He floods the whole toilet with it. Being fresh blood I wasn’t too concerned but the fact that it continued led me to take him to the dr. He was prescribed laxatives and we were told to return after 2 weeks, thinking it was constipation. 2 weeks later the dr was clueless so sent us to children’s hospital emergency. After 3000 questions and several examinations they finally found what they think was a haemorrhoid. We were sent off again with stronger laxatives. That was a month ago. It is still happening except now there is more blood and now he is experiencing clots. I have been back to the dr who has sent off another fax to the hospital but now we have to wait for an appointment. I’m not generally a person who stresses about things but should I be jumping up and down yet or is it nothing? Just wondering if anyone else has been through this.

  • The fact that it is fresh blood is kind of reassuring. Still needs medical attention, which you do indeed. You’re doing the right thing. Hope you get the answers soon.

  • I’ve got to say that if this was happening to my child, I’d be visiting emergency daily till they did some tests. It is not normal.

  • This would be extremely worrying.

  • Jumping up and down for sure. I think hospitals sometimes forget they have people on a waiting list. Let the specialist know things have worsened and hopefully they’ll bump you up the list. Also see your gp again and get them to alert the specialist that things have worsened. Fingers crossed for you

  • Gosh this sounds concerning, what was the outcome? Is he ok now

  • I hope everything is ok now and you got the answers you needed. I’d be worried too.

  • I had a similar problem with my son and it was as they have told you….it was a heamorroid. They explained that it was like one of those long skinny balloons that when you blow them up, they form a bubble in a particular place before the rest of the balloon is inflated….this spot is a weak spot. They have prescribed laxatives so that your son isn’t straining and putting pressure on the weak spot. My sons problem sorted itself over time but other than that it may require a minor op to remove the heamorroid. Hope this eases your concern!

  • haemorrhoids aren’t usually bad but they are uncommon for children does he have enough fibre in his diet also they can be caused by diarrhoea so be careful with laxatives. another cause could be… well i know you don’t want to think about it with him only being 11 but could he be experimenting (sexually) with putting things in his bum?
he might be to embarrassed to admit it to you or to a dr while your there.

definitely make sure he gets seen by specialists for the problem though as they can become serious. very serious.

  • You need an answer and I’d be asking to see a specialist. Apart from anything else, your son shouldn’t be losing so much blood. I hope this is sorted out soon.

  • I would definitely be jumping up and down. Find another doctor who will refer you to a specialist

  • there are some good comments here

  • I would be jumping up and down. This sounds serious. Be forcefully with what u want.

  • How is he going now?

  • If that was my child, I’d be jumping up and down.

  • That is horrible!!! They should be doing more!
