Hello!

Our daughter is now 3.5 months old, and I’m wondering at what age (or weight) it is considered safe for her to face out (instead of towards me)? We were given the original Baby Bjorn as a hand me down from friends so I don’t have a manual to consult. TIA

  • Yes, when they have neck control !

  • I have been told by a few people its safe to face baby outwards as soons as they can support their own head!

  • when they can hold up their own head, and have control of neck – otherwise can cause damage x

  • What a great question! Thanks for all the responses I found this interesting

  • For some brands you can buy an insert that supports their bead and neck for longer. Some now have them standard. I know Ergo have them but I don’t know about other brands.

  • We have the Ergobaby carrier. It recommends front facing from 5 months.

  • I think as soon she shows neck support she is ok.

  • If it’s one of the ones that don’t have sufficient support through the legs, I would suggest reading up on http://hipdysplasia.org/ so you can make an educated choice.

Baby carriers are a fantastic resource if they are used correctly. It sounds as though it will be a while before you will be able to turn her around.

  • any point that there neck muscles are strong enough

  • If my baby was wide awake she wanted to face out from about 3-4 months. If she was sleepy I would have her facing me so she could snuggle in…

The baby really needs to be able to hold their head well before you consider changing.

  • I never had any of my kids facing away from me as I liked to use the Baby Bjorn as a tool where we were close we talked and played games and had eye contact being held comfortably. I had hands free and could do some housework with baby nearby. Always check that baby’s neck is supported or is at a age that they can hold their own.

  • Once they are comfortably able to hold their heads up by themselves they can safely face forwards. None of my children liked facing outwards ever, but my grandson loves it.

  • I will look at my manual when Bubs wakes up as it is in his room.

  • once they can hold their head up, but they cant for a long time, i used to change my daughter around a bit so she didnt get to tired. from memory she would cope about 20 minutes forward facing then id turn her around so she could snuggle.
work up, I wouldnt be in any rush maybe by 6 months bub can be full time outward for trip out but in for sleeps.
you will find ‘baby wearers” groups all over facebook. search your local area on there.

  • Seems obvious now that I’ve heard your responses! Thanks ladies. Might have to wait a little bit longer yet :)
