Hello!

There are conflicting ideas as to when to start.

  • The current recommendation is 6 months old but some children show signs of readiness before then. If your child is showing all the signs of readiness before then you can start a little earlier ( just not before 4 months.)

  • I started both of mine at 4 months. Made it around lunchtime and just used Heinz baby food. Always tried the same 3 or days in a row to see if it caused any reactions, then moved onto someting different.

  • It is suggested at 6 months old – this is when they start to show signs on ‘readiness’ (looking at your food, chewing motions, grabbing your food etc). Your MCH nurse may support you to start earlier if need be, but this was unnecessary for us. 6 months was the perfect time! Goodluck – it’s a fun journey!

  • My bub started at 4.5 months old with the support of our child health nurse, but remember, it’s not about getting them to “eat” solids – it’s just about having fun, experiencing new textures and flavours. If they spit the whole lot out, that’s totally ok. Milk is still their number 1 form of sustenance. Look for signs your baby is ready. Are they sitting up fine and don’t need help with their head, are they looking at your food when you eat – my kid looked like he’d jump out of his seat and walk over and take my food if he could. You’ll know if they’re ready. Just give them little tastes here and there and see how they respond – let them guide you.

  • Around 6 months old! A lot of the time babies show those signs that they are ready to try new foods, I know mine did. It is strongly recommended not before 4 months old because their systems are still very immature.
