Hello!

Hi, I’m thinking of studying to be a teacher aide. The hours and holidays are the real appeal. Just wondering if anyone else has done this and what its like?

  • Friends have done it, and they enjoy the work immensely.

  • I have been working as a teachers aide for 9 years now due to my health being compromised. Its great working hours allows me to still do the kids pick up and drop off and be home during the school holidays. If you can pick a contract at the school, you are also paid during the school holidays for the number of days that you are contracted to work.

  • If you love kids and want to work in a school it can be very rewarding.

  • The pay is not overly worth it. If you want to study you’ll get more from being a teacher

  • Good luck. I hope you will enjoy working with kids.

  • I have always wanted to do this as a job but the pay rate just isn’t worth it to me.

  • My sister did it and got offered so much work as there were always teachers on holidays or sick

  • It is a hard and rewarding job and very worthwhile. There are always pros and cons to all jobs. Good luck!

  • Yes I would also love to do this I think there are Tafe courses out there for this type of work

  • One of my best friends did and she worked as a casual for a while until she got full time work. She really loved it and the hours were good. Unfortunately the pay is not fantastic though :(

  • My cousin did the course and became one last year – she absolutely loves it

  • I’m an early childhood teacher and I can say that good teacher aides are worth their weight in gold! It’s a shame the pay isn’t better.

  • My daughter in law is one. She is a qualified child carer and went from child care to teachers aide with no extra study. With her son starting school, the hours suited better then childcare

  • I am currently studying towards becoming a TA and I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. What really made up my mind was I didn’t get the promotion at work like I wanted to, I was working crazy hours and missing out on family time. I joined my daughter’s school P&C and fell in love with the school, even more, I am lucky enough to be doing placement at her school and also know I am close to my daughter and once I am qualified and working there hopefully I won’t have to stress about other people dropping her off to school etc. I do one day want to be a teacher but for now ill stixk to TA.

  • Being a teachers aide can give you a fulfilling career. Keep in mind with reduced hours and holidays you will need to stretch your dollar. Good luck on your new endeavour.
