Hello!

I’m wanting to make some homemade mac and cheese for my daughter. I’ve only ever eaten Homebrand cheese so not sure about strength of flavours of other cheeses. Any recommendations for cheese with a bit of bite/stronger taste? Thanks in advance :)

  • I’ve found the pizza mix of cheese for a subtle flavour so it doesn’t over power the whole dish

  • I buy the 4 cheese melt when it goes on special – it has a mix of cheeses so gives a nice all round flavour

  • I’m not a huge fan of cheese so we usually just go for tasty cheese or a mild cheddar cheese.

  • Colby grated cheese. Cheap and cheerful, tastes good and melts well

  • My sister Iaw makes a lot of cheesy pasta and potato bakes etc and I think she uses any mozerella cheeses that goes on sale and you can buy packs that are already shaven or buy them in a block and you can grate it yourself . I am not a cheese fan as I like tomato base sauces so don’t make them often .

  • My family love cheese – my son loves stringy mozzarella, I really love the woollies homebrand tasty cheese – we tested this at a party with a bunch of cheese snobs, and heaps said wow, love the cheddar, which brand is it!!!
So, we mix mozzarella and cheddar together, so you get a little sharpness from the tasty cheese, and the stringiness of the mozzarella.

  • Vintage cheese is often on special and your local deli too!

  • I just use whatever’s in the fridge – the kids don’t seem to mind

  • I find the LongLife Kraft cheese in block form Purchased of the shelf in the isles of the supermarket the best for kids, it has no strong flavor and melts easily on the pasta.

  • I add tasty cheese and Parmesan cheese. It gives it a bit more taste but still child friendly.

  • I second the cheese combination mixes. They tend to melt well and have a very nice flavour.

  • We use tasty cheese generally. However last time we made it with one of the cheese blends you can buy from the shop. Gouda, mozarella, parmesan and cheedar I think it was. We had to add more milk as became very stringy. Tasted good tho

  • We use Cracker Barrel vintage cheddar extra sharp. It comes in slingles and block and it a fantastic cheese!

  • I love cheese and tend to get ‘extra tasty’ certainly has a stronger taste. You can get it in most brands but a cheap one is woolworths select brand

  • French mustard is very mild – no more bite than a tasty cheese. Mine has always loved it.
